BACK-TO-BACK! Poyser Wins 2nd Straight District Crown!
Lucas Poyser defeated Walsh Jesuit’s Dominic Scarberry by a 6-3 decision in the 160-pound weight class championship bout to claim his second straight Division II District Title at Alliance High School Saturday evening.
Poyser had the only takedown of the match early on and he held his lead throughout. With the win, Poyser is now 28-1 on the season, but has a bigger goal in mind…a state crown.
Poyser started his district championship run by getting an easy 0:41 pin in the first round against Fairless’s David Arnold. He then used two takedowns to win his final Friday match by a 5-4 decision over CVCA’s Tyler Maclellan.
In the District Semifinal against Ricky Kochert, Poyser did everything but pin the young man from Chagrin Falls. Four takedowns, 10 nearfall points, and 2 reversals later and the NBC Player of the year was storming into the championship round with a 22-6 technical fall victory.
Poyser defeated Crestwood’s Mitchel Porter in overtime to claim the Division II Firestone District Title in the 152-pound weight class last year.
NEXT UP: Those individual wrestlers who qualified for State Meet will compete in the State Tournament at the Schottenstein Center’s Auxiliary Gymnasium in Columbus on Thursday, March 1 to Saturday, March 3.
