Leopards Take 8th at Brecksville Invitational – Wrestling

Louisville – 122 (8th Out of 49)

The Louisville Leopards Wrestling Team competed at the prestigious Brecksville Invitational Holiday Tournament on Sunday, December 29 and Monday, December 30. Louisville scored 122 point which allowed them to finish 8th out of 49 competing teams. Four of those teams were ranked in the top 20 in the country at the start of the meet.

Garett Lautzenheiser went undefeated against five opponents to finish as the 120 pound champion in leading the Leopards. Davin Rhoads (132) also placed 3rd and Jax Leonard took (170) 4th. Others placing for Louisville included Brent Paulus (195) and Blake Robbins (220) who both finished in 6th.

Lautzenheiser was voted by the coaches as Most Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament as he defeated two state champions en rout to his 120 title. Lautzenheiser pinned the previously undefeated Casey Swiderski from Dundee (Michigan) in 4:50 to advance to the title bout. Swiderski was Michigan’s 103 pound MHSAA state champion in Division 3 a season ago as a Freshman. In the 120 final, Lautzenheiser took on a stiff test in Lake County Perry’s Kyle Rowan who was riding at least a 51-match winning streak going 41-0 as Junior and starting his Senior season with a mark of 10-0. Lautzenheiser earned a 10-4 decision over the reigning DII 106 State Champion and Stanford Commit to claim the Brecksville 120 title.

Rhoads lost a 5-2 decision to Elyria’s Nate Burnett in the 132 championship quarterfinal, but battled all the way back through the consolation bracket with three consecutive victories to earn himself a spot in the third place match. Rhoads earned a 4-2 decision over the nationally ranked Jimmy Carmany of Brecksville to claim third place in 126. Carmany was ranked 20th in the nation for 126 pounds in Wrestling USA Magazine coming into the match.

Jax Leonard started the tournament with three straight wins by fall in the 170 bracket, but was pinned in the championship semifinals by Ethan Hernandez of Norwalk. Leonard earned a 4-1 decision over Jaden Hardrick of Huber Heights Wayne in the consolation semifinals to secure his fourth place finish. He would conclude the tournament dropping a 5-3 decision to Manuel Rojas of Detroit Catholic Central.

Both Paulus and Robbins journeyed similar paths to sixth place finishes in each of their respective weight classes. Paulus and Robbins both lost by fall in the championship quarterfinals before bouncing back for two straight consolation victories. In the consolation semifinals Paulus sustained an injury in the second period and lost by default. Paulus was unable to return for the 195 fifth place match and bowed only by medical forfeit to take sixth. Robbins was pinned in both the consolation semifinals and 220 fifth place match to also claim sixth place.

The Detroit Catholic Central Shamrocks won the tournament as a team with 247.5 points. Host Brecksville-Broadview Heights took second place with 237 and the Elyria Pioneers came in third with 170 points. The Aurora Greenmen also took fourth place and were the only Ohio Division II team that finished ahead of the Leopards.
