Hoffarth & Rhoads Win District Titles, Barker Also Qualifies for State – Wrestling

Equitable Advisors - Bryce MathieThe Louisville Leopards Wrestlers competed at the DII Garfield Heights District Tournament Friday and Saturday at Garfield Heights High School. Louisville finished with 99 team points to take 5th place out of 51 competing teams. 

The Medina Buckeye Bucks captured the district title with 237.5 team points and the St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish took district runner-up with 126 team points. Finishing just ahead of the Leopards were the third place CVCA Royals with 103 points and the fourth place Streetsboro Rockets with 100 team points.

Hoffarth Pins All 4 Opponents En Rout to Title

Louisville senior Dominic Hoffarth (150) pinned all four of his opponents in the first period on his way to his first district title. He pinned Canton South junior A.J. Nichols (27-18) in 1:02 before taking down #14 ranked Ashtabula Edgewood junior Josh Biller (25-18) in 1:14. In the championship semifinals, Hoffarth won by fall against #7 ranked Cloverleaf junior Tristan Craddock (44-3) in 1:37. In the district title bout, Hoffarth also pinned #27 ranked Streetsboro sophomore Cohen Kilmak (29-7) at the 2:00 mark to capture the district crown. 

Despite winning state last year in 138, Hoffarth was tripped up by eventual district champion Tristin Greene (Keystone) in the district championship quarterfinals in 2022. Since then, Hoffarth has won 15 straight tournament bouts including a state, sectional, and district title.

This is the third time Hoffarth has qualified for state in the last 4 seasons. He previously finished third at districts in both 2020 and 2022.

Hoffarth also registered a team high 30 team points individually for LHS. He is now 33-4 on the season overall and will look to win his second straight state title next week in Columbus.


Rhoads Captures 1st District Title

My Fit Life Personal Trainer Side AdLeopard senior Dylan Rhoads (132) also went undefeated, scored 26 team points, and also captured his first district title. Rhoads pinned Firelands sophomore Daren Aslaksen (23-15) in 4:43 during the opening round and then won by fall in the championship quarterfinals against #14 ranked Woodridge junior AJ Rickenbacher (40-10) in 2:37. 

In the championship semifinals, Rhoads handed #5 ranked Jefferson Area junior Brogan Fielding (44-2) just his second loss of the season by 6-1 decision. Then Rhoads upset #1 ranked Streetsboro senior Donovan Paes (38-4) by 5-2 decision in the district championship bout.

This is the second time that Rhoads has qualified for the state tournament after he took third place in 126 during last year’s district tournament. He is now 34-8 on the season and 6-0 this postseason in the individual tournament. Rhoads will look to keep that perfect postseason mark at the state tournament at Ohio State next week.


Barker Punches 2nd Ticket to State

Lingenhoel Group - Arden and Lisa Lingenhoel - Cutler Real Estate AdLouisville junior Kolten Barker (126) also qualified for state for the second straight season with a third place finish at the district tournament. Barker’s only defeat came in the championship semifinals against #1 ranked St. Vincent-St. Mary senior Bryce Skinner (33-9) by 5-4 decision.

Barker then won both of his consolation matches to take third. He shutout Madison junior Jack Harrison (34-12) by 12-0 major decision to clinch a state birth. Barker then earned a 10-6 decision against #7 ranked Canfield sophomore Tyler Scharrer (28-4) in the consolation final.

Barker finished with 18 team points and is now 33-9 on the season. He also finished in third place at last year’s district tournament.


Novosel Teaks 5th to Conclude Career

Jenny Can Cleaning AdLeopard senior Connor Novosel (113) took fifth place at districts to finish is varsity career. He was edged by #14 ranked CVCA freshman Rocco Czarnecki (25-9) in the championship semifinals by 5-4 decision to drop to consolation.

In the consolation semifinals, Novosel was pinned in the second period by #16 ranked Marlington sophomore Aiden Bean (40-15). However, Novosel rebounded by shutting out #7 ranked St. Vincent-St. Mary junior Christian Osborne by 5-0 decision in the 5th place match. Novosel would finish with 11.0 team points.

Freshman Colton Rhoads (106) also scored 7 team points. Freshman Beau Nezbeth (120) and sophomore Wyatt Smith (157) added 3 team points each. Both senior Jude Yeager (165) and junior Ben Brendle (285) rounded out the Louisville scoring with 1 point a piece.
