Third Quarter Scoring Runs
The two teams played to a 23-23 tie in the first half. The Leopards came out of the break on a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the game at 30-23, but the Panthers answered right back with a 9-0 run to pull ahead 32-30. Perry would hold that advantage through the end of the third quarter and take a 37-35 advantage into the fourth.
Louisville Rallies in 4th Quarter
The Panthers would extend their advantage to 44-37 when junior shooting guard Marlee Pireu made a three-pointer from the top of the arch with 5:19 to play. The Leopards would trail by seven points twice in the final stanza as they also faced a 46-39 deficit with just 3:37 remaining.
Louisville responded with a 6-0 run in less than a minute to trim their deficit to one. Freshman Taylor McCully made her second three-pointer of the game on the ensuing possession. Then Haren earned three points the old-fashioned way. She caught a pass while cutting through the lane and scored on a lay in while being fouled. Her free throw got the Leopards to within 46-45 with 2:45 remaining.
Pireu Leads Perry with Team High 15
Just when you thought Louisville had snagged all the momentum, Perry answered back on the other end. Pireu hit another three from the same spot at the top the arch in which she had scored earlier. The make put the Panthers in front 49-45 with 2:24 left.
Pireu would finish with a team high 15 points and a game high 8 rebounds to lead Perry. Other top scorers for the Panthers included senior shooting guard Maddie Knop with 11 and senior power forward Macy Takacs with 8.
Leopards Blank Panthers in Final 2:24
Haren failed to connect on the other end and Perry retained possession. The Panthers managed to milk about a minute off the game clock before the tenacious defense of Barwick and McCully forced a steal. The Leopards were unable to score off that turnover and were forced to put Perry into the bonus with a foul.
Knop failed to hit the rim on the ensuing 1-and-1 attempt, which turned the ball back over to Louisville without any damage done. Barwick made the most of the opportunity spinning to her right and driving the baseline to the basket to trim the Leopard disadvantage to 49-47 with 32 seconds remaining.
Each team shot free throws on the next two possession. The Panthers failed to add to their lead again when Pireu missed her 1-and-1 attempt. Miglich was fouled for Louisville and made the back half of a pair of free throws to get LHS to within 49-48 with only 7.3 seconds to play.
Haren Hits Deep 3 at Buzzer to Lift Leopards
The Leopards committed their ninth team foul on defense putting freshman shooting guard Lila Kleve to the line for another 1-and-1 with 5.9 seconds left. The ball ricocheted off the back iron and Miglich corralled the rebound. The ball was quickly poked away by the Perry defense, but found the hands of Louisville senior Delaney Orin in the key. She passed the ball ahead to Miglich and Miglich pushed the ball down court to Haren who was alertly separating behind her defender into position on the other side of the court.
Haren caught the pass, dribbled once, and fired from WNBA range near the right wing. The basketball grazed off the back of the rim, and through the net, sending the gym into a frenzy. The coaching staff was fired up and the Leopard bench cleared as Haren was mobbed by her teammates at mid-court.
