The Louisville Leopards Varsity Softball Team finished on top in their seesaw extra inning affair during game one of their double header with the host Canfield Cardinals at McCune Park Saturday.
Denzer Goes 4-for-5 to Lead Louisville
Sophomore third baseman Kenzi Denzer batted 4-for-5 with three doubles, an RBI, and scored a pair of runs to lead the Lady Leopards. Denzer doubled to center field to lead-off the second inning before coming home via a single to left field by senior designated hitter Stevie Barrett to knot the game at 1-1.
Later in the third inning, Denzer delivered a 2-out, RBI double to right field scoring sophomore courtesy runner Paige Folk to again tie the game at 2-2.
Benson Leads Leopard Fourth Inning Rally
Louisville rallied back from their third deficit of the game in the fourth inning. Sophomore shortstop Matti Benson hit a 2-out, 2-run triple to left field that brought home freshman courtesy runner Olivia Mongiardo and senior first baseman Jenna Collins to trim the Canfield lead to 5-4. Two pitches later, Benson scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 5-5.
The Cardinals answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning when junior center fielder Gianna Pannunzio singled and eventually scored on a passed ball to put CHS back in front 6-5.
Barrett Drives Home Game-Tying Run in 5th
The Lady Leopards countered for a fourth time in the top of the fifth. Denzer led off the inning with a line drive double to center field and advanced to third on a groundout by junior second baseman Shelby Mayle. On the next pitch, Barrett hit a ground ball to first base that allowed Denzer to score from third to knot the game at 6-all.
Neither team threatened again until the top of the seventh. Senior catcher Brooke Brendle and Denzer hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with one out, but the Cardinals were able to get out of the jam. Canfield was unable to push across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh and the game continued on into extra frames.
Brendle Drives In Go-Ahead Run
Each team only managed to get a single runner aboard in the eight inning and the game waned on. Benson worked the count full before drawing a walk to lead off the top half of the ninth. Freshman left fielder Matti Adams was hit by a pitch after that to put two runners on with no one out for LHS.
A wild pitch advanced both runners into scoring position for Brendle. On the next pitch, she hit a ground ball to second base and it was enough to bring Benson across for the go-ahead run to put Louisville in front 7-6.
Thomas Closes Out Canfield
Senior shortstop Jackie Kinnick got aboard for the Cardinals with 1 out in the bottom of the ninth on a line drive single to center field. On the next pitch, Angelo lined into a double play to end the contest. Denzer made the grab at third and relayed the ball to Collins at first for the twin killer.
Junior starting pitcher Kendra Thomas threw a complete game en rout to earning her second victory of the season. Thomas pitched all 9 innings, surrendered 4 earned runs on 11 hits, and struck out 1. Thomas seemed to get stronger as the game progressed as she faced the minimum in in the fifth, sixth, and ninth innings.
The Cardinals pounded out 6 runs on 9 hits through the first four innings. Senior second baseman Madison Angelo, senior first baseman Bayann Jadallah, and Kinnick all finished with 2 hits each for Canfield. Junior right fielder Cara Spencer also hit a 2-run single in the third inning for CHS. Jadallah and sophomore third baseman Macey Kalina recorded RBI singles for the Cardinals as well.
Thomas settled down after that shutting out Canfield over the final 5 frames while allowing just 2 hits from the fifth inning on.
Game 2: Canfield 4, Louisville 2
The Louisville Leopards Varsity Softball Team was doubled up by the host Canfield Cardinals 4-2 in game two of their double header with the host Canfield Cardinals at McCune Park Saturday.
Mayle Gives Leopards the Early Lead
While Louisville countered every Canfield score in the first game, it took them nine innings to capture a lead. The story changed in game two as the Lady Leopards wasted no time in taking an early advantage in the top of the first. Junior second baseman Shelby Mayle hit a line rive 2-out, RBI single to right field that brought home sophomore courtesy runner Paige Folk from second to give Louisville a 1-0 edge.
The Cardinals took their first lead in the third inning when junior center fielder Gianna Pannunzio cleared the bases on one trip for an inside-the-park home run. The play was officially ruled an RBI triple before she scored on a throw. Either way Canfield led 2-1 after two frames of action.
Collins Knots the Game at 2-2
Sophomore shortstop Matti Benson walked on a full count to lead off the top the third for the Lady Leopards. The next two batters recorded outs, but Benson was able to advance to second in the process. A passed ball allowed Benson to take third after that.
Five pitches later, senior third baseman Jenna Collins got aboard via an infield single to the pitcher which allowed Benson to score the game-tying run from third. Collins would finish with 2 of Louisville’s 4 hits in the game.
Angelo and Kelly Deliver Big for Canfield
Senior second baseman Madison Angelo led off the bottom of the third with a triple for Canfield. Two batters later, junior right fielder Cara Spencer grounded into a double play, but Angelo was still able to score the go-ahead run on the play to push CHS in front 3-2.
The Cardinals added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth. Senior designated hitter Bridgett Kelly hit a solo homer to left field to put Canfield ahead 4-2 with 1 out in the bottom of the fourth.
Toth Fans 12 for Cardinals
Neither team would score the rest of the way as the Cardinals held on for a 4-2 win. Canfield sophomore starting pitcher Malena Toth threw a complete game, surrendered just 1 earned run on 4 hits, and struck out 12 to earn the victory.
Louisville sophomore pitcher Katie Heath threw 6 innings, gave up 4 runs on 7 hits, and struck out 2 in a losing effort.
