Cuts Made If School Levy Fails, Sports Affected

Louisville High School

Beatty's Winter HoodiesTuesday is a big day for the nation as well as Louisville Public Schools and the vote on Issue 53 for an Emergency School Levy.

The last time Louisville passed a levy was back in 1992.  At the time, the school promised to make the money from that levy last 5 years before passing another one.  They have made it last 20 years and now a $1.4 million cut in state funding to Louisville will force cuts to programs and teachers across the board.

If Issue 53 fails, these are the cuts/consequences effective this year:

  • Spring Sports Pay to Pay will increase to $350
  • Elimination of Outdoor Education and other Supplemental contracts not already awarded
  • Extended Days
If Issue 53 fails, these are the cuts/consequences effective for 2013-14:
  • 25 Teaching Positions will be eliminated, which includes 4-6 Coaches
  • Drastic Increases in Pay to Participate for Sports and Other Activities
  • State Minimum in Busing
  • Elimination of Free All Day Kindergarden, Teaming, Woods, Etc.
  • $90,000 OAPSE
  • Instructional Fees
  • Increased Class Sizes at all Grade Levels & Buildings

Louisville has been labeled an “Excellent” school District for years, despite operating in the position of the bottom 10 (out of about 610 school districts) in receiving school funding for the state.  It is easy to look at the new stadium, new middle school, and new elementary school and ask why the money was not spent on other educational needs.  However, the funding for these facilities was mostly through private funds from the community and the funds for these buildings are entirely separate.  For more frequently asked questions and a full in-depth look at the levy please click this link to the Paw Print Newsletter:
