Louisville Wins 8th Sectional Title in 9 Years

This marks the first Division I sectional championship in program history for Louisville after moving up from Division II last season, where the Leopards finished second at Euclid in 2025.

It also marked Louisville’s eighth sectional title in the last nine tournaments, following Division II sectional championships in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024.

Seven Leopards Climb to the Top of the Podium

West Main Vet Clinic AdJust as impressive as the team margin was Louisville’s depth from top to bottom. The Leopards crowned seven individual sectional champions, finished with 12 district qualifiers by placing in the top four, and saw every wrestler in the lineup reach the podium. Louisville’s seven champions are the program’s most since 2022, when the Leopards crowned eight sectional champs, a team-record feat Louisville produced in both 2020 and 2021as well. The Leopards competed in Division II during those seasons.

Louisville’s charge was led by Paxton Laughlin (113), Xavier Pollard (120), Liam Montgomery (132), Kaiden Barker (138), Aric Criss (144), Micah Bricker (190), and Jakeb Beard (215), all of whom captured sectional titles.

Paxton Laughlin (113)

Laughlin powered through the 113-pound bracket with a pair of first-period pins before closing with a strong 12-5 decision over Walsh Jesuit’s Wyatt Cleary in the finals. He opened by sticking Strongsville’s Mustafa Eddir in just 0:42, then pinned Berea-Midpark’s Dominic Nofel in 1:40 in the semifinals before finishing the job in the championship match.

Xavier Pollard (120)

Pollard was dominant at 120. He pinned Strongsville’s Henry Smith in 1:51 in the semifinals, then claimed the title by injury default over Hoover’s Stamatios Paxos at 2:54. Even before the final, Pollard had already shown he was in control of the bracket.

Liam Montgomery (132)

Montgomery looked sharp at 132, opening with a 13-4 major decision over Brandon DeBlasis of Berea-Midpark, then rolling to another major decision, 13-3 over Hoover’s Ethan Kling, in the semifinals. In the title bout, Montgomery captured the championship by injury default against New Philadelphia’s Tyler Ulmer at 5:47.

Kaiden Barker (138)

Barker had one of the most dominant runs of the day at 138. The junior opened with a pin over Walsh Jesuit’s Nick Maxwell in 4:00, then posted a 21-5 technical fall over Hoover’s Alexander Fremon and a 19-3 technical fall over Strongsville’s Tyler Petkov before finishing the tournament with a pin over Berea-Midpark’s Dylan DeVincent in the championship match.

Aric Criss (144)

Criss also looked every bit like a title contender at 144. He opened with a 21-6 technical fall over Ostap Korpan of Strongsville, followed that with a 9-1 major decision over Hoover’s Nathan Skolnik, and then knocked off GlenOak’s Grant Cundiff 9-6 in the finals to secure the sectional crown.

Micah Bricker (190)

At 190, Bricker bulldozed through the field with three pins. He decked Harvey’s Brijon Poole in 1:09, pinned Berea-Midpark’s Christopher Woodford in 1:55 in the semifinals, and then pinned Walsh Jesuit’s Chase McKenna in 3:45 in the championship match.

Jakeb Beard (215)

At 215, Beard was just as commanding. He pinned Berea-Midpark’s Christian Vigilante in 1:21 in the quarterfinals, stuck St. Ignatius’ Caine Glover in 3:13 in the semifinals, and then pinned Harvey’s Elijah Hall in 3:19 in the final to complete Louisville’s seventh title run.

Three Leopards Finish as Runners-Up

Gionino's Pizzeria Oakwood - Mobile AdLouisville nearly had even more champions. Emilio Rodriguez (106), Mikhail Montgomery (150), and Lucas Neff (157) all reached the championship finals before falling to finish as sectional runners-up.

Emilio Rodriguez (106)

At 106, freshman Rodriguez put together a strong tournament, highlighted by a 17-1 technical fall over Walsh Jesuit’s Braden Haley in the semifinals before finishing as sectional runner-up after a 7-0 loss to Hoover’s Constantinos Paxos in the championship match. Paxos holds a record of 38-1 on the season.

Mikhail Montgomery (150)

At 150, Mikhail Montgomery reached the finals with an 8-0 major decision over St. Ignatius’ Eddie Lentz and a pin of Hoover’s Seth Dorland in 2:41. He ultimately finished second after running into Walsh Jesuit’s Tyler Tirabassi in the title bout.

Lucas Neff (157)

At 157, Lucas Neff turned in a strong run to the final. Neff pinned GlenOak’s Kayson Maynard in 1:05 in the quarterfinals and then pinned Hoover’s Leonidas Paxos in 1:46 in the semifinals before placing second after a finals loss to Berea-Midpark’s Xaviere Harden.

Louisville Sends 12 to Districts

Louisville also had a pair of third-place finishers in Colton Rhoads (126) and Zander McCrobie (285).

Altogether, six wrestlers joined the seven champions to give Louisville 12 district qualifiers for Wadsworth by virtue of top-four finishes. This is the most district qualifiers the Leopards have produced since sending 12 to the district tournament in 2021. The 2020 team still holds the program’s high mark with 13 district qualifiers.

Colton Rhoads (126)

Rhoads opened with a pin over Berea-Midpark’s Landen Quintanilla in 1:23, lost a razor-tight 13-12 semifinal to GlenOak’s Ian Sonogan, then rebounded with a pin over St. Ignatius’ Andrew Novak in 3:35 before taking third by medical forfeit over Hoover’s Joel Gregory.

Zander McCrobie (285)

McCrobie pinned St. Ignatius’ Luke Spinos in 5:04 in the quarterfinals, fell to Walsh Jesuit’s Joey Ma in the semifinals, then stormed back with a 0:18 pin over Berea-Midpark’s Josh Hartman and another pin over Spinos in 0:44 to claim third.

Fifth-Place Finishers Complete an All-Place Team Effort

Louisville’s depth showed up all the way through the consolation side as well. Both Brayden Elsass (165) and Logan Klimes (175) took fifth place

That meant all 14 Louisville wrestlers placed at the sectional tournament, the first time this has happened since 2020.

Brayden Elsass (165)

At 165, Brayden Elsass battled back to take 5th place, ending his tournament with a pin over Berea-Midpark’s Morris Ross in 4:44

Logan Klimes (175)

At 175, Logan Klimes also finished 5th, pinning St. Ignatius’ Sameer Zaben in 2:14 and then later pinning Hoover’s Troy Cosentino in 4:31 in the fifth-place match.

Other Teams and Champions

While Louisville dominated the team race, the rest of the top ten featured Walsh Jesuit in second with 182.5 points, North Canton Hoover in third with 151, and Strongsville in fourth with 145.5. Berea-Midpark, GlenOak, St. Ignatius, Harvey, New Philadelphia, and host Euclid rounded out the rest of 10-team field.

Outside of Louisville’s seven champs, the other individual sectional champions were:

  • 106: Constantinos Paxos (Hoover)

  • 126: Michael Rusinko (Strongsville)

  • 150: Tyler Tirabassi (Walsh Jesuit)

  • 157: Xaviere Harden (Berea-Midpark)

  • 165: Caden Mariola (Walsh Jesuit)

  • 175: Luke Evensen-Hein (Walsh Jesuit)

  • 285: Joey Ma (Walsh Jesuit)

A Division I Breakthrough

For a program that had already built a remarkable sectional legacy in Division II, Louisville’s 2026 performance at Euclid felt like another major step forward. The Leopards did not just win their first Division I sectional title — they blew the doors off the field, crowned seven champions, qualified 12 wrestlers to districts, and placed all 14 competitors on the podium. After finishing second at Euclid a year ago, Louisville left no doubt this time.
