The Louisville Leopards Wrestling Team competed at the DII West Branch Sectional Tournament Saturday at West Branch High School. Louisville compiled 266 team points and ran away with their fifth consecutive DII sectional championship. In comparison, the Cloverleaf Colts finished as sectional runner-up with 197 points and the Howland Tigers took third place as a team with 131.5 points.

Eight Leopards Secure Sectional Titles

My Fit Life Personal Trainer Side AdEight different Leopard wrestlers finished undefeated in their respective weight classes en rout to securing individual sectional championships. They included sophomore Kolten Barker (113), junior Dylan Rhoads (126), senior Pablo Castro (132), junior Dominic Hoffarth (138), senior Brenden Severs (157), senior Noah Peterson (175), senior Blake Schaffer (190), and senior Cameron Brazek (285).

Lingenhoel Group - Arden and Lisa Lingenhoel - Cutler Real Estate AdCastro and Severs each claimed their third sectional titles in as many seasons. Brazek and Rhoads also secured their second straight sectional crowns after winning titles in last year’s sectional tournament. Peterson was a sectional runner-up in 2021 and Hoffarth took third in 2020. Both earned their first sectional titles along with Barker and Schaffer.


Barker, Castro, and Rhoads Record 3 Pins Each

Jenny Can Cleaning AdBarker, Castro, and Rhoads all advanced with a first round bye before earning falls in their championship quarterfinal, semifinal, and final matches. Castro pinned all three of his opponents in the first period. Barker and Rhoads each recorded a pair of first period falls as well. All three wrestlers scored a team high 28 points each to lead Louisville to the team title.

Rhoads, ranked #12 in 126, upset #11 ranked Howland sophomore Adam Heckman with a first period fall in the championship finals.

Hoffarth also tallied 27.5 points with a pair of pins and a 17-0 technical fall against Coventry junior Evan McGhee in the championship semifinals. His second pin came in 1:22 against #24 ranked Howland senior Rian Spangler in the 138 title bout. 


Brazek & Schaffer Defeat Top 5 Wrestlers in Finals

Schaffer, ranked #2 in 190, pinned his first two opponents in 36 seconds and 37 seconds respectively. In the championship match, Schaffer earned a 9-4 decision against #5 ranked Poland senior Dillon Smith to claim his first sectional title.

Brazek, ranked #7 in the 285, also pinned his first two opponents each in the second period. Brazek then upset #5 ranked Howland senior Gage Gibson via 1-0 decision to earn his second straight sectional championship. 

Brazek, Peterson, and Schaffer also finished with 26 team points each. 


Eleven Louisville Wrestlers Qualify for District

Eleven different Louisville wrestlers qualified for the district tournament after Saturday’s sectional action. Other district qualifiers included junior Connor Novosel (120) who placed 2nd, senior Lacy Harvey (106) who took 3rd for the second straight year, and junior Jude Yeager (165) who finished in 4th place.

Novosel, ranked #38 in 120, upset #36 ranked West Branch sophomore Michael Dorris by 8-0 major decision in the quarterfinals. He would later succumb to a first period pin against #37 ranked Alliance senior Maliki Mason. Novosel finished with 19 team points.

Harvey dropped an 8-4 decision to #15 ranked Hoban junior Tommy Conway in the 106 championship semifinals. He took out that loss on Girard sophomore Cody Carpenter in the consolation semifinals with a 34 second pin, the fastest on the day for any Leopard. Harvey would finish with 14 team points.

Others contributing to the Louisville point total were Yeager with 12 team points and senior Josiah Walker (144) with 4 team points.
