Softball Breaks Team HR Record in Sectional Win Over Marietta
Louisville 11, Marietta 1, 6 Innings
The Louisville Leopards Varsity Softball Team run-ruled the visiting Marietta Tigers 11-1 in 6 Innings in the DI Massillon Sectional Semifinals Thursday at LHS. Louisville has now won 13 straight games and holds a 20-6 season record overall. The Lady Leopards advance to play at #3 Seed GlenOak Friday in the Sectional Finals.
Louisville’s Kirsten Wharmby set the tone early by striking out 4 Marietta batters in the first inning (a passed ball allowed an extra strikeout). Wharmby would carry a no-hitter into the fifth inning before a slap-shot, 2-out infield single by Betts broke it. This was the only hit allowed by Wharmby who pitched a complete game and struck out 11. The Tigers managed to score their only run on an error, but never hit the ball out of the infield.
Katie Cozy led the Leopards offense by batting 3-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI’s. Grace Jackson also batted 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored, Savannah Miner batted 2-for-3 with a walk-off 2-run single & 3 runs batted in, and Kylie Zifer also hit a solo homer & scored 3 runs. Zifer’s smash to left field in the second inning was Louisville’s record-breaking 30th home run of the season. This eclipsed last year’s single season team mark of 29. For Zifer, it was her third round-tripper of the season.
Lexi Givens also drove in 2 runs. Her and sister Leandra Givens each bunted home Leopard runners and Aliyah English also picked up an RBI on a groundout.
With the win, Louisville now leads the all-time series over Marietta 2-0. The Leopards also defeated the Tigers 3-1 in the 2006 DI Massillon Sectional Semifinals. Louisville is now 29-30 all-time in tournament play and 17-4 at home in tournament games.
UP NEXT: The Lady Leopards will next travel to GlenOak to take on the #3 Seed Golden Eagles on Friday, May 15 at 4:30 PM in the DI Massillon Sectional Finals.
