Leopards Go 2-1 at Perrysburg Quad, Defeat Perry & Mayfield – Wrestling

My Fit Life Personal Trainer Side AdThe Louisville Leopards Wrestling Team competed in a quad match at Perrysburg High School this past Wednesday. This quad match replaced the originally scheduled Brecksville Invitational, which was cancelled.

The Leopards finished 2-1 against a group of prestigious Division I wrestling programs to up their record to 4-1 on the year. Louisville first defeated the Massillon Perry Panthers 40-27. The Leopards fell to the host Perrysburg Yellow Jackets in close second match 30-28. Finally, LHS downed the Mayfield Wildcats 47-27 to close out the night.

Lingenhoel Group - Arden and Lisa Lingenhoel - Cutler Real Estate AdLouisville started off the quad by earning a hard fought 40-27 victory over cross-county powerhouse Perry 40-27.

The Leopards benefited from a forfeit right from the start. Justice Bolyard (195) claimed the free six points for LHS. The Panthers answered back with three straight decisions from Logan Shephard (220), Aiden Fockler (285), and Austin Mcburney (106) to take a 9-6 lead. Charles Curtis (113) then won by 16-1 technical fall to put Perry in front 14-6.

Samantha's Grill AdThe Leopards rallied by winning 3 of the next 4 match-ups by fall to claim a 28-14 advantage. Dan Adams (120) pinned his opponent in the final minute of the third period, while Garett Lautzenheiser made quick work of his foe in just 46 seconds. Pablo Castro (132) followed with a 10-0 major decision and Davin Rhoads (138) won by pin in just 1:21 for Louisville.

The Panthers refused to go quietly in taking 3 of the next 4 bouts to cut the Leopard advantage to only 7 points. Sam Thompson (145) won by 11-3 major decision and Skyler Ristoff (152) captured a 9-3 decision. Dan Kennedy (160) followed with a key pin for Louisville in 2:57 to break the Perry run and clinch the match for LHS. The Panthers would get within 34-27 after Sam Rhodes (170) also won by fall in the first period of his match.

Brenden Severs (182) closed the match the same way it started by claiming victory through forfeit. LHS won by a 40-27 final tally as a result.

Jenny Can Cleaning AdLouisville was edged by host Perrysburg 30-28 in their second match of the evening. The loss was the Leopards first dual defeat in two seasons,

The score stood at an even 6-6 at the end of three match-ups. The Yellow Jackets Brayden Butzin (220) and Ryan Avalos (106) both claimed decisions. Cameron Brazek (285) won the heavyweight match-up by forfeit for the Leopards first six points of the match.

Louisville won the next four matches to pull ahead 19-6 on their hosts. Dan Adams (113) started off the run with a 12-3 major decision. Lacey Harvey (120), Garett Lautzenheiser (126), and Pablo Castro (132) then earned back-to-back-to-back decisions for the Leopards to give them a double digit advantage.

The Yellow Jackets stung back with 20 straight points over the next 4 matches. Joey Blaze (138) earned a 4-0 shutout decision and then Wynton Denkins (145) racked up points in a wild 25-10 technical fall. Alex Garee (152) and Noah Ewen (160) followed with back-to-back falls for Perrysburg to put them in front 26-19.

Dan Kennedy (170) responded with a hard-fought 4-3 decision to get Louisville within 26-22. Then Brenden Severs (182) made quick work of his opponent needing just 34 seconds to complete the win by pin. That put LHS back in front 28-26.

It all came down to the 195 bout to decide the match. Ryan Musgrove proved victorious for the Yellow Jackets with a 12-3 major decision as host Perrysburg prevailed 30-28.

The loss snaps the Leopards 19-dual match winning streak dating back to February 7, 2019 when they won at Lake 40-31. Louisville’s last dual defeat came in the 2019 DII, Region 12 Championship against the Beaver Local Beavers 51-21.

The Leopards roared out of the gate and staved off a vicious Wildcats comeback attempt to earn a 48-27 victory in their final match of the quad. 

Louisville dominated from the start in taking 6 of the first 7 match-ups to amass a 30-6 lead at the midway point of the match. Dylan Rhoads (106), Garett Lautzenheiser (126), Pablo Castro (132), and Davin Rhoads (138) all won by fall during the run. Cameron Brazek (285) and Dan Adams (113) also claimed decisions for the Leopards. 

Mayfield’s only points came from Eddie Wallace (120) who came away with a first period pin. That soon changed as the Wildcats won the next 4 bouts to shrink their deficit to 30-27. Dominic Tudini (145), Colton Brandenburg (152), and John Doe (170) all won by fall for MHS. Anthony Santoro (160) also won an 11-8 decision during Mayfield’s streak of victories.

Jenny Can Cleaning AdLouisville put the match away with back-to-back falls following the Wildcat run. Brenden Severs (182) pinned his opponent in just 14 seconds to give the Leopards a comfortable 36-27 advantage. Justice Bolyard (195) followed with the match-clinching pin in 2:31 to put LHS ahead 42-27.

Noah Peterson (220) also claimed the final match of the evening for the Leopards via forfeit to make the final score 48-27.
