Leps Walk Carrollton Out in 5, Tennis Defeats St. Thomas 4-1
BASEBALL
Louisville 11, Carrollton 1, 5 Innings
Louisville 7, Carrollton 0, end of the first…nope Leopards football didn’t hold a spring game against Carrollton this year. But, baseball did blitz the Warriors for a touchdown’s worth of offense in the opening inning en route to burying the Warriors 11-1 in five innings.
Pitcher Dillon Sterzbach set the tone early by sending the Carrollton hitters down in order and striking out two in the opening frame. Sterzbach would go the needed five inning distance, striking out six, walking none, and surrendering just one run.
The Leopards poured it on in the bottom of the inning starting with Mike Kelly’s lead-off double. Riley Groves and Jeremy White then drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. The clean-up hitting Jon Crank then blasted a line drive to right field for a double bringing home Kelly and White. Chad Neff would walk next to reload the bases, before White would take home on a wild pitch. Chris Duckworth would keep the broken record playing by taking the vacant the first base after four balls.
With the bases juiced, Carrollton got their first out of the game as Stertzbach grounded into a fielder’s choice throwing out Duckworth at second. However, Crank still scored on the play putting Louisville up 4-0. The aggressive Stertzbach would steal second base, once again leaving first base open. Next, Jake Duvall struck out swinging, but the Leps weren’t finished.
Neff scored on a passed ball to make it 5-nil. Then Adam Nees walked and stole second base before Kelly took his spot on first after a base on balls. A Groves single to left brought home Stertzbach and Nees. Finally, Carrollton put the the Leopards away as White hit a long fly out to center. 7-0 Louisville.
The Leopards picked up an additional run in the third inning when Groves grounded out to short allowing Duvall to cross the plate. After two quick outs in the fourth inning, the Leps loaded the bases which allowed Duckworth to come home after the Warriors walked Nees with all the ducks on the pond. Kelly then grounded to third, but the Carrollton third baseman couldn’t field it properly allowing Duvall to beat the force at third. The hustle by Duvall allowed Stertzbach to score, but Carrollton still managed to get out of inning down by single digits at 10-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, White reached base on a walk. Then he took second on a wild pitch, before advancing to third on a sac fly by Duckworth. Another wild pitch brought a sliding White in for the score, which put Carrollton out of their misery. A steal of home to end the game told the story of the day as Louisville walked eleven times, and scored eleven runs on just six hits.
