Louisville Leopards at Canfield Cardinals Girls Basketball 2012 Video Highlights
Louisville 74, Canfield 69
Four Lady Leopards reached double digits, but it would not be enough as they fell at Canfield 74-69. The combined 143 points by the two teams in the most for a single game in Lady Leopards Basketball history and their 69-point total marks the most points ever scored by a Louisville team in a losing effort.
The four Louisville players that reached double digits were Jordan Monnot with 16 points, Clara Lemmon with 15 points, Hollyann Mullett with 14 points, and Hannah Lemmon with 13. But their efforts could not overcome the Cardinals who were led by Sabrina Mangapora who scored a game-high 29, Rachel Tinkey who hit home 3 three-pointers to score 19, and Abby Baker who also added 11.
The Lemmon Sisters took over in the first quarter as they combined to score 14 of the Leopards 16 points. Despite the offensive output, the Cardinals still led 17-16 after the first eight minutes. The Cardinals would go on to extend their lead to double digits at the break after they outscored Louisville 22-12 in the second period.
The Leopards once trailed by as many as 14 in the opening minutes of the second half, but trimmed the lead to 52-44 by the end of the third quarter after Monnot led all scorers in the period with 6 points.
In the fourth, Louisville got within 62-57 with 2:18 to play. However, the Cardinals would score the next 5 points to reclaim their double digit advantage. The Leopards clicked the “no” button when given the option to quit though as Mullett made things interesting by swishing home 3 three-pointers in a span of just 63 seconds to cut the Canfield lead to 72-68. The Cardinals turned the ball over on the inbound and Monnot was fouled on the Leps ensuing possession. Monnot netted the front end of a pair of free throws to get Louisville within a single shot.
However, the Lady Leopards rally would come up short as Tinkey would hit two free throws on the other end with 8.2 seconds remaining. Canfield finished 88% (16 of 18) from the line for the contest, but no shots were as big as the final two. These final two points not only sealed the deal for the Cardinals for the third time in four tries all-time against the Leopards, but they also helped break the all-time combine scoring record for two teams in a single game in Lady Leps history. Rachel Zeller scored a team-high 14 points and Emily Hollifield scored 8 fourth quarter points to lead the Lady Leopards to a 41-40 win over the host Canfield Cardinals Wednesday.
Louisville trailed 38-35 late, before Zeller added 2 baskets and Grace Jackson scored another to put Louisville up 41-38. A few possessions later, the Leopard defense held off Canfield to win the contest by the smallest of margins.
The score was tied at halftime and at the end of the third quarter before Louisville prevailed. Amazingly, Louisville won the game without making a single free throw and was sent just two trips to the charity stride for the entire contest.
With the win Louisville is now 4-1 on the season,
