Nigro Drops in 31 & Scores 1000th Point

Equitable Advisors - Bryce MathieSenior guard Hayden Nigro scored 20 of his game high 31 points in the second half to lead the Leopards. He scored 9 in the opening quarter and added 11 on to his total in the second quarter.

With 24 seconds remaining before halftime, Nigro scored his 20th point of the night on a runner in the lane to put Louisville ahead 46-25. The scoreboard horn sounded in the following seconds and play came to a halt as Nigro had joined the 1,000 point club. Leopards Head Coach Tom Siegfried took over the PA microphone and declared: “At this time we would like to honor Hayden Nigro who just became a 1,000 point scorer.” He then presented Nigro with a 1,000 points poster and Nigro’s parents joined him at mid-court to celebrate in honoring the accomplishment.

Nigro would tack on 11 more points in the second half, including 8 in the fourth quarter to help Louisville put Hoban to bed. He would finish 14 of 21 from the floor, 2 of 5 from beyond the arch, and also dished out 4 assists to his teammates. Nigro now sits at 1,012 points for his career.

Louisville Utilizes 16-1 Run to Flip Early Script

The defending Division I state champions stormed out to a 9-2 lead out of the gate and it looked early on like it might be a long night for the Leopards. However, the tide quickly changed as Louisville answered back with a 16-1 run to pull ahead 17-10.

Jonas Nichols scored on a lay in on the other end for the Knights and was fouled. He then made the extra free throw from the line to cut the Leopard lead to 17-13.

Louisville returned the favor on the other end as junior forward Brayden Gross grabbed an offensive board out of the air near the free throw line and split through three Hoban defenders on his way to the bucket. Gross was also fouled on the drive, but was not able to convert the free throw attempt leaving the score at 19-13.

Gross would finish with a double-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.

Siegfried Leads Leopard 1st Quarter Surge

My Fit Life Personal Trainer Side AdThe Leopards would close the first quarter scoring 8 unanswered. Junior guard Beau Siegfried hit a pair of three-pointers in the final 30 seconds to cap off a 23-4 Louisville run that put them ahead 25-13 at the end of the opening period. Siegfried swished a three from multiple feet beyond the three-point line on the right wing off a feed from junior guard Tate Aljancic. On the defensive end, Aljancic drew an off-ball offensive foul against the Knights with 10 seconds remaining giving the ball back to LHS.

Siegfried led the inbound pass roll across the backcourt to save time before taking possession of the ball near mid-court. Siegfried passed to back to Nigro who drew a double team at the top of the key. That left Siegfried wide open from his sweet spot on the right wing and he cashed in on his third three-pointer of the quarter just before the horn sounded.

Siegfried finished with 11 of his 17 points in the opening quarter. He would sink 2 more triples before the night ended to unofficially finish 5 of 10 from beyond the arch for the game. Siegfried also dished out 8 assists and registered 4 steals. He along with Nigro received co-Player of the Game honors following the contest.

Nichols Leads Knights with Team High 24

Lingenhoel Group - Arden and Lisa Lingenhoel - Cutler Real Estate AdLouisville continued to add to its total in outscoring Hoban 21-12 in the second quarter to take a 46-25 lead into halftime.

Nichols scored 13 of his team high 24 points in the third quarter to help Hoban cut into the Louisville lead. The Knights outscored the Leopards 19-11 in the third to trim the margin to 57-44. Nichols scored double figures in the first half and had 23 points heading into the fourth quarter.

However, Louisville held the 2023 All-Northeast Ohio Inland District Division I Player of the Year to just a single point in the final stanza. The Leopards would out-score the Knights 22-7 in the final period and walked away with a convincing 29-point victory. Nichols was also Hoban’s leading rebounder with 8 and tallied a team best 3 assists.

Joey Hardman also reached double digits with 12 to go along with a pair of steals. Josh Greer also finished with 5 and Samuel Green scored 4 for the Knights.

Louisville Earns 1st Victory Over Hoban

This is Louisville’s first victory over Archbishop Hoban in boys basketball. The Knights won the previous three meetings, which included sectional tournament games in 1998 and 2008. Hoban also won the 2021 meeting at Louisville 65-34, which came after a late schedule swap during the first year of the pandemic.

The Knights won their first state title since 1989 last season in a 53-47 victory over Pickerington Central in the DI championship game. Hoban is now 1-2 on the season after back-to-back losses to Warren JFK and now Louisville.
