Record 5 Leopards Qualify for State Meet, Leonard Wins District Title – Wrestling

The Louisville Leopards Varsity Wrestlers Competed at the DII Alliance District Wrestling Tournament Friday and Saturday at Alliance High School. The Leopards scored 130 points to place 5th in the District. Seven different Louisville wrestlers placed and 5 of those punched their ticket to the State Meet next week in Columbus.

Jax Leonard went an undefeated 4-0 for the weekend in earning the 145 District Title. Leonard dominated the championship match by earning a 14-4 major decision over CVCA’s Justin West. The key match in Leonard’s title run was a 2-1 decision over Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary’s Jacob Potok in the second round.

Ryan Jakubiak also battled his way to the 113 District Championship match. Jakubiak won on a late pin in the opening round before earning single point decisions in the next two rounds. His 7-6 decision over CVCA’s Matthew Williams sent him to the finals against West Branch’s Christian Wayt. Jakubiak was edged 5-3 in the final matchup.

Other state qualifiers included Garett Lautzenheiser (106), David Rhoads (120), and Blake Robbins (220). Lautzenheiser defeated Revere’s Nick Gayner by a 9-2 decision to place 3rd. Rhoads also claimed third after earning a 4-2 decision over Aurora’s Kyle Petersen in the finals. Finally, Robbins defeated Hoban’s Jacob Petit by 7-1 decision before falling in the finals to CVCA’s Breslin Walker by an 8-2 decision to claim 4th place.

The 5 Louisville state qualifiers is a new single season school record. It eclipses the previous record of 3 Leopards individual state qualifiers set by nine different LHS teams (1977, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1993, 2006, 2010, 2017).

Two other Louisville wrestlers also placed during Saturday’s District Meet. Riley Brendle earned a thrilling 5-1 decision in double overtime against Norton’s Ben Hornacek to capture 5th in the heavyweight finals. Daniel Kennedy also claimed 6th after competing in the 138 finals.

The Canfield Cardinals won the District with 169.5 total points. Canfield also won the Team Tournament District Title 33-31 over Louisville back on January 31. The CVCA Royals took second with 163.5 points, St. Vincent-St. Mary claimed third with 137.5 points, and the Lake Catholic Cougars took 4th just ahead of the Leopards at 133 points.
