Benson’s Late Goal Lifts Louisville Past Cuyahoga Falls in DI Sectional Semifinal – Girls Soccer

The #17 seed Louisville Leopards earned a nail-biting 2-1 victory over the #28 seed Cuyahoga Falls Black Tigers in their DI Northeast 2 Sectional Semifinal match Monday Evening at Louisville Leopards Stadium. With the victory, Louisville improves to 10-6-1 on the season and advances to play the #1 seed Jackson Polar Bears in the DI Northeast 2 Sectional Finals on Thursday, October 22 at 6:00 PM.

Matti Benson scored a pair of unassisted goals in the second half to help lift the Lady Leopards to the tournament win. Benson gave Louisville a 1-0 lead to break the deadlock early on in the second half. Cuyahoga Falls (4-11-1) answered with a goal by Ellie Brustowski to knot the game at 1-1 after that.

Then with a little over six minutes remaining in the contest, Benson found the back of the net again to put the Lady Leopards in front 2-1. Benson now joins teammates junior Morgan Keelan (29 goals)) and senior Gabby Smith (12 goals) as the third Louisville player with double digit goals scored this season now with 10.

The Lady Leopard defense held the Black Tigers scoreless the rest of the way to clinch the victory. Sophomore goalkeeper Amelia Henderhan finished with 17 saves in net to lead LHS on defense. Cuyahoga Falls outshot Louisville 17-12 for the match, but the Lady Leopards held a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.

With the win, Louisville is now 2-2 against Cuyahoga Falls all-time. The Lady Leopards also won their last matchup against the Black Tigers 2-1 back on August 24, 2016.

Louisville is now 9-17 all-time in the postseason with the victory. This includes a 5-2 record when hosting tournament games.
