Louisville Holds Early Lead to the End Vs. Boardman 4-3 – Baseball
Louisville 4, Boardman 3
The Louisville Leopards Varsity Baseball Team won a close contest with the visiting Boardman Spartans 4-3 Monday Evening at Andy Aljancic Field. With the victory, Louisville improves to 11-7 on the season.
Siegfried Helps Leopards Score Twice in 1st
The Leopards offense wasted no time in taking a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning. Junior designated hitter Karson Siegfried doubled home sophomore shortstop Andrew Corona to put Louisville on the board the first. A pair of walks followed which moved Siegfried over to third and loaded the bases. After the second out was recorded, Siegfried came home via a wild pitch to put LHS in front 2-0.
Siegfried would finish 2-for-4 at the plate for the evening.
Roberts Drives In Adelman Twice
The Leopards added to their lead in the second. Senior left fielder Connor Adelman doubled to center on the first pitch of the Louisville second inning. On the next pitch, senior right fielder Zack Seaman reached base on an error which advanced Adelman to third. Junior center fielder Charlie Roberts followed by landing an RBI single in right field which brought Adelman to the plate to put the Leopards ahead 3-0.
Boardman got a run back in the top of the third, but Louisville matched it in the bottom half of the inning with clutch two-out hitting. Adelman cracked a two-out single and junior right fielder Kyle Vesely followed with a walk. On an 0-1 pitch, Roberts delivered again with a drive to right field for an RBI single that scored Adelman from second. The clutch hit put the Leopards in front 4-1 and the run would prove to be the difference in the contest.
Roberts would bat a perfect 2-for-2 for the night and Adelman finished 2-for-3 at the dish for LHS.
Root Earns Win, Miller Notches Save
Louisville sophomore starting pitcher Zach Root pitched five innings, gave up three runs on nine hits, and struck out two to earn the victory on the hill. Root remains unbeaten on the mound improving to 3-0 on the season with the win.
With a 4-3 lead, Root turned the ball over to fellow sophomore pitcher Cole Miller in the sixth to close out the game. Miller allowed a pair of hits to to start the the sixth inning, but was nearly flawless after that. Miller retired the final six batters he faced including striking out one in the process. The effort earned him his second save of the season.
Spartans Out-Hit Leopards 11-8
Despite the loss, the Spartans out-hit the Leopards 11-8 for the game. Third baseman Anthony Butto, second baseman Jack Dascenzo, left fielder Colin Thomas, and shortstop Griffin Widrig all had two hits each to lead Boardman.
The Spartans scored in three straight innings, but were limited to just a single run in each frame. Butto singled home Thomas to put Boardman on the board in the third. Then pitcher Stephen Conti’s sacrifice fly plated first baseman Gavin Hyde to chop the Louisville lead in half in the fourth. Finally, catcher Seth Cervello singled home Widrig in the top of the fifth to trim the Spartan deficit to 4-3. That would be as close as they would get.
