The Louisville Leopards Varsity Baseball Team avenged their sectional final loss from last year’s tournament by shutting out the visiting Salem Quakers 2-0 in a pitcher’s dual Wednesday Evening at Andy Aljancic Field. With their third straight victory, Louisville improves to 12-7 on the season.
Warner Strikes Out Nine in Shutout
Senior starting pitcher Anthony Warner threw a complete game shutout to lead the Leopards. He threw seven innings, surrendered just four hits, and struck out nine en rout to his team leading fifth victory of the season.
Warner faced his biggest threat in the fifth inning when the Quakers put two runners on with just one out. The inning turned on Salem quickly as Warner picked off left fielder Brock Young at first for the second out of the inning and then struck out second baseman Lance Bailey swinging on the next pitch to end the frame.
Salem later threatened again in the seventh when designated hitter Corey Riesen hit a two-out double to right field. But Warner would preserve the shutout a batter later when he struck out third baseman Hunter Carlisle to end the game.
Warner retired the side in order in four of the seven innings he pitched for Louisville. He remains unbeaten on the mound this season improving his win-loss record to 5-0 for the year.
Morley Goes 3-for-3 at the Plate
Junior second baseman Connor Morley batted a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish accounting for half of the Leopards hits in the game. Morley also scored Louisville’s second run of the contest when senior shortstop JT Popick walked with the bases loaded.
The Leopards only other run came a batter earlier when junior center fielder Charlie Roberts was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded bringing home senior left fielder Connor Adelman from third. Louisville managed to push across two runs in the second inning even though the first two Leopards batters were retired to start the frame.
Rhodes and Wilms Lead Salem
Salem starting pitcher Gavin Wilms pitched a complete game throwing six innings, giving up two unearned runs on six hits, and striking out five in a losing effort.
The Quakers were led at the plate by shortstop Carson Rhodes who finished 2-for-3. Louisville out-hit Salem 6-4 for the contest.
