Leopards Stung By Hornets at Home 8-3 – Softball

The Louisville Leopards Varsity Softball Team fell to the visiting East Canton Hornets 8-3 Tuesday Evening at West Main Vet Clinic Field. With the loss, Louisville drops to an even 5-5 on the year.
Senior first baseman Lauren Stillwagon finished with 2 of the Lady Leopards 6 hits to lead LHS at the plate. Freshman shortstop Matti Benson also doubled home freshman right fielder Brooke Haren to get Louisville on the board in the third inning. Second baseman Shelby Mayle followed with a sacrifice bunt to drive home Benson from third making it 3-2 .
Steigerwald Homers Twice to Lead East Canton
However, shortstop Kaley Steigerwald would rip the game open for East Canton with a 2-run homer to center in the fifth and another 2-run bomb in the seventh inning to make it 7-2. Steigerwald would finish the evening 3-for-4 and score three runs to lead the Lady Hornets.
East Canton (4-3) would tack on another run in the top of the seventh when centerfielder Kayla Blankenship drove in pitcher Marisa Hall to make it 8-2. Louisville matched that run in the bottom of the seventh when senior center fielder Kaylee Nolte reached base on a 2-out error scoring freshman pinch-runner Kenzi Denzer from third to cut the deficit to 8-3.
Hornets Sting Leopards Early Again
Just like in their meeting earlier this year, the Lady Hornets swarmed out of the hive to an early lead. They scored three runs in the top of the first inning Tuesday and never relinquished their advantage. Third baseman Alyssa Wahl doubled in Steigerwald and catcher Tori Hankins followed with a 2-run homer to left field to put East Canton ahead 3-0.
Wahl also finished 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles. In the circle, Hall earned the victory pitching a complete game, giving up 2 earned runs on 6 hits, and striking out 8.
Leopards Vs. Hornets Softball Series
This is East Canton’s first ever victory over Louisville. The Leopards still lead the all-time series 2-1 overall.
