The Louisville Leopards Girls Varsity Basketball Team fell to the visiting Northwest Indians 43-38 Saturday Evening in the first game of a varsity co-ed doubleheader at Louisville High School. With the loss, Louisville drops to 13-6 on the season..
Haren Pours In Game High 29 for Louisville
Sophomore guard Brooke Haren poured in a game high 29 points to lead the Lady Leopards. Haren hit 2 of the Lady Leopards 4 three-pointers in the final 52 seconds of the game. This included converting a heave from half court as the final buzzer sounded.
Haren scored Louisville’s first 7 points of the contest propelling the Leopards to a 7-3 lead to start the game. Northwest answered back with a 6-0 run to reclaim the lead at 9-7 with 2:19 left in the opening quarter.
Junior guard Taryn Miglich and senior guard Maddie Dyer made back-to-back three-pointers in response to match the Indians 6-0 run. Miglich hit from the deep left corner to put Louisville back in front at 10-9 in the final minute of the opening quarter. Dyer opened up the second period with a three from the left side of the arch to up the LHS lead to 13-9.
Indians Take Command with 8-0 Run at Midpoint
The two teams continued to exchange baskets back-and-forth and eventually battled to a 19-19 tie late in the second quarter. The Lady Indians seized momentum, and the lead, with pair of buckets just before half. Northwest 6’2 junior center Lily Bottomley used her height advantage to grab an offensive board off her own miss and put it back for an easy lay-in to make it 21-19 with 1:08 to go before halftime.
Then on defense, Indians 6’0 senior small forward Carly Spradling tipped away a pass into the hands of sophomore point guard Delanie Carmany. Spradling immediately sprinted down the court a step ahead of the LHS defense and Carman delivered her a pass in stride as the final seconds ticked away. Spradling dribbled twice and then scored on an easy fastbreak layup as the buzzer sounded to put Northwest ahead 23-19 heading into the locker room.
The Lady Indians would also score the first four points of the second half to open up a 27-19 advantage. The Lady Leopards shrunk the lead down several times and even got to within 31-28 in the early stages of the fourth quarter. However, Northwest seemed to always have an answer to every Louisville run. Their response this time was a 12-4 run which gave them their largest lead of the evening at 43-32 heading into the final minute of plan.
Bottomley Drops in 21 to Lead Indians
Bottomley led the Lady Indians by scoring 8 of her team high 21 points in the fourth quarter. Spradling also broke double figures with 12 and junior shooting guard Ashley Cudnik added 7 points for Northwest.
The Lady Indians have now won four straight meetings over the Lady Leopards since 2019, which happen to be the only four games played in the series since Northwest left the Northeastern Buckeye Conference in 2011. Louisville still leads the all-time series 27-22 dating back to 1989, which includes a 13-11 mark at home in the series.
