The #12 Seed Louisville Leopards Varsity Football Team fell to the visiting #21 Seed Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Lions 14-7 in Round 1 of the Division III, Region 9 playoffs Friday Night at Louisville Leopards Stadium. With the victory, Louisville drops to 2-5 on the season.

Senior quarterback Tyler Jackson was 13 of 29 passing for 118 yards and also led the Leopards in rushing with 11 carries for 26 yards. Jackson hit senior wide receiver Broc Pickens in the back left corner of the endzone for a 5 yard touchdown on 3rd-and-goal with 2:12 to play in the game. Myles Lab’s extra point was good chopping the Lions lead in half at 14-7.

NDCL 73 Yard Backbreaker in the 4th

Samantha's Grill AdLouisville’s 12 play, 79 yard scoring drive came in response to Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin’s second touchdown of the game that gave them a commanding 14-0 lead. Facing 3rd-and-10 on their own 27, junior quarterback Jacob Koenig went deep down the right sideline. 6’4 senior wide receiver Noah Coyne came down with the jump ball at the Louisville 38 and then scampered the rest of the way to complete a 73 yard touchdown pass. In a game that featured lots of defense and 11 punts, this was undoubtedly the play of the game.

Lions Take 1st Half Lead

My Fit Life Personal Trainer AdNotre Dame-Cathedral Latin got on the board first when junior Ashton Gotham scored from a yard out on the first play of the second quarter. The 3rd-and-goal run capped off a 15 play, 90 yard Lion drive. Gotham, who also had a 25 yard run on the second play of the drive, would finish as NDCL’s leading rusher with 15 carries for 136 yards.

Two key plays helped the Lions sustain their long drive. On a 3rd-and-11, Koenig ran to his right and found senior tight end Nathan Slattery for a 29 yard gain to the Louisville 34. Following that, senior runningback Jaiden Mangelluzzi converted a 4th-and-2 on a 3 yard run to the Leopard 26. Then back-to-back first down runs by Koenig and Mangelluzzi setup NDCL 1st-and-goal on the LHS 2. Three plays later Gotham scored from a yard out after the teams flipped fields at the end of the quarter.

Leopards Defense Intercept A Pair of 2nd Quak

Lingenhoel Group - Arden and Lisa Lingenhoel - Cutler Real Estate AdThe next two Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin drives ended in the hands of Louisville. Junior defensive back Zack Seaman looked like the receiver on his interception at the the Lions 34. He ran on the inside of the intended receivers route and snagged the ball out of the air before returning it to the NDCL 41. On the following Lion drive, Leopard senior defensive back Dan Kennedy made a sliding interception at the LHS 49.

Louisville was unable to capitalize on either takeaway. A 4th-and-10 pass from the NDCL 26 was batted away by Lions junior defensive back Ryan Niska just in front of the goal line. Later the Leopards faced 3rd-and-5 from the NDCL 35 yard line. The ensuing pass was picked off by junior defensive back Ryan Moskal at the NDCL 15 and returned 12 yards to the 32.

This was the first ever meeting between these two programs. Louisville is now 14-17 in the playoffs all-time which includes a 4-7 record at home in the postseason.

UP NEXT: Unconfirmed rumors have us potentially hosting the Jackson Polar Bears one week, Week 9 hosting the Alliance Aviators (October 23), and the strongest rumor is Louisville will be hosting the Green Bulldogs Week 11 on Friday, November 6 (Friday Night Ohio, Joe Eitel have this game).
