Lady Leopards Fall in Seesaw Battle Vs. Marlington 51-49 – Girls Basketball

The Louisville Leopards Girls Varsity Basketball Team was edged by the visiting Marlington Dukes 51-49 Saturday Afternoon at Louisville High School. With the loss, Louisville drops to 13-5 on the season.

Haren Leads Louisville with Team High 16

Senior Brooke Haren scored 9 of her team high 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead the the Leopards. Junior Courtney Barwick hit a pair of three-pointers and finished with 14. Sophomore Taylor McCully also splashed home 3 three-pointers and broke double figures with 11.

Other scorers for Louisville included junior Chay Cline with 5 and sophomore Maggie Baker who scored 3.


LHS Leads at the End of First Three Quarters

My Fit Life Personal Trainer Side AdThe Leopards took control out of the gate by leading 11-7 at then end of the first quarter. The Dukes answered with a 9-0 run to begin the second stanza that put them ahead 16-11.

Louisville responded with a 7-0 run to recapture the lead via three straight baskets by Barwick. Baker and McCully then followed with three-pointers to put the Leopards ahead 24-19 at the half.

Louisville led by as much as 28-20 in the third quarter, before Marlington rallied back with 6 straight points. However, the Lady Leopards never relinquished their lead in the third quarter and held a slim 34-32 advantage heading into the final period.


Leopards and Dukes Seesaw in Fourth

Lingenhoel Group - Arden and Lisa Lingenhoel - Cutler Real Estate AdSenior small forward Chelsea Evanich scored the first basket of the fourth quarter to knot the game, but Haren answered back with a bucket. Evanich again scored to tie the game before Cline hit 1-of-2 shots from the line to put Louisville back in the lead 37-36.

Marlington responded by taking their largest lead of the game. Evanich made a 3, scored another basket, and junior point guard Zoe Mort scored while being fouled to cap off a 7-0 Duke run that put them ahead 43-37. 

The Lady Leopards once again answered with a 7-0 run of their own. Haren hit home on a three-pointer from the right corner, stole a pass on defense, and hit a pair of free throws to put LHS back to within a point. McCully blocked a Duke shot on defense, and Haren drove and scored on the other end to put Louisville ahead 44-43 with under three minutes to play.

Marlington took the lead back on junior shooting guard Allie Gill’s three-pointer from the left corner with 2:16 remaining. Mort then stole a Leopard pass on the opposite end to give possession back to the Dukes. A shot attempt missed, but Evanich crashed the offensive glass, scored in the lane, was fouled, and converted the bonus free throw at the line to put MHS in the driver’s seat at 49-44.

Louisville looked poised for one more push after Barwick scored and Baker recorded a steal on defense. However, two Leopard shot attempts missed in a frantic possession before Evanich hauled in a defensive board for the Lady Dukes. After multiple fouls, Evanich hit a pair of clutch free throw attempts with 14.9 seconds left to all but seal it for Marlington at 51-46.

McCully got the Leopards within striking distance by stepping back and hitting from downtown, or at least 3 feet beyond the arch, with 2.2 seconds to play. The Dukes would miss two free throw attempts on the other end, but Evanich secured the offensive board and the game for the Dukes.


Evanich Leads Marlington with Game High 26

Equitable Advisors - Bryce MathieEvanich scored 13 of her game high 26 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Lady Dukes. Gill also scored 8 and Mort tacked on 7 to round out the top scorers for Marlington. Others registering in the scorebook included senior shooting guard Ava Clough with 6 and senior shooting guard Mahlen Lambdin with 4.

The Dukes have now won 4 of their last 5 games and improves to 8-10 on the season with the victory.


Dukes Win 3rd Game at Louisville in 26 Years

The Lady Dukes have now defeated the Lady Leopards in back-to-back seasons. The victory is only Marlington’s third at Louisville since 1998. The Dukes are now 3-22 when playing at Louisville High School in that span. Marlington’s last victory at LHS was was a 49-46 win on January 31, 2018. The Dukes also won at Louisville 67-56 back on February 16, 2009.

The Lady Leopards still lead the all-time series 70-22, which includes a 34-12 record when playing at Louisville in the series. After dominance by the Leopards for years, the series is now an even 5-5 in the last 10 meetings overall..
