Leopards Snatch Early Lead

The 40-point underdog Leopards (according to Drew Pasteur’s Fantastic 50) seemed primed for an upset of the defending Division V state champions when they snatched an 8-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Louisville punted on their first two possessions, but the Leopard defense forced three-and-out punt to setup a great field possession on the third possession. Sophomore returner Gabe Stoffer waived for a fair catch at the Raider 43 yard line and South Range was called for kick catch interference moving the ball to the Raider 28. Still, the Leopard offense was unable to move the chains after a 4th-and-4 fell incomplete giving the ball back to South Range at their own 22.

However, on the next play the Raiders mishandled a handoff in the backfield and Louisville senior defensive lineman Camren Atwell fell on it for the Leopards at the 20 South Range 20 yard line.

On the first play of the next possession, Louisville attempted to run a reverse pass but the play resulted in a 10 yard sack. The Leopards redeemed themselves on the next play. Senior quarterback Owen Burick rolled to his right before throwing back to junior runningback Cam Dougherty wide open in the left flat. He was sprung by a blocks from freshman lineman Trevor Burick and downfield by senior wide receiver Braiden Hershey. Dougherty ran seemingly untouched into the endzone for the 30 yard score to get the Leopards to within 7-6 with 23 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

Louisville was called for a penalty on the extra point attempt backing them up five yards. On the try from the 7 yard line: Stoffer took the snap and flipped the ball to junior kicker/quarterback Tate Aljancic running to his right. Aljancic easily tossed a pass to Hershey wide open in the endzone for the two-point conversion giving the Leopards their first lead, at 8-7, since week four against North Canton Hoover.

Long Louisville Drive Comes Up Empty

Louisville fought hard to hang with the defending DV state champions in the first half. South Range drove 64 yards on 10 plays to take the lead back on a 28 yard field goal by senior placekicker Logan Butcher with 8:28 to go before halftime.

Trailing 10-8, the Leopards mounted a 16 play, 73 yard drive down to the Raider 4 yard line. Sophomore runningback Owen DiMarzio carried for a first down on a 3rd-and-4 up to keep the drive alive at the LHS 45. Louisville faced a 4th-and-7 on the next series and Owen Burick lined up in punt formation. Instead he found the right side of the field vacant and scrambled for 15 yards to move the sticks down to the South Range 48.

DiMarzio took a handoff on the next play for 16 yards down to the 21 yard line. On 3rd-and-9, Owen Burick found his brother sophomore Quin Burick over the middle for for a 10 yard completion to setup goal to go at the 10. On fourth-and-goal, Owen Burick scrambled right before throwing left to Trevor Burick who had lined up as a tight end on the play. The reception resulted in a 5 yard loss and the Raiders took over on their own 9 yard line with 1:21 left before halftime.

Deem Interception Keeps Game Close at the Half

Despite starting in the shadow of their own goal posts, the Raiders wasted no time in trying to add on to their lead before halftime. South Range drove 59 yards on 6 plays into Leopard territory down to the 32 yard line. Then a 15 yard facemask call on Louisville put the ball at the LHS 17 yard line with about 16 seconds remaining.
