The Louisville Leopards Varsity Football Team was defeated by the visiting Steubenville Big Red 41-8 on Senior Night Friday at Louisville Leopards Stadium. With the loss, Louisville finishes the season with a 1-9 record.

Burick Breaks Shutout in 4th Quarter

Equitable Advisors - Bryce MathieNursing a 41-0 advantage, the Big Red rolled the dice on 4th-and-3 from their own 31. Junior defensive end Wyatt Smith stormed into the backfield to stop Steubenville sophomore runningback Julius Mullins in the backfield for a 1 yard loss. The Leopards took over on downs at the Big Red 30.

Facing 4th-and-7, senior quarterback Owen Burick through a jump ball up top to senior wide receiver Braiden Hershey who hauled it in for a 23 yard reception setting up Louisville 1st-and-goal at the Big Red 4. On third-and-goal, Burick ran up the gut for a 2 yard touchdown run to get the Leopards on the board on the first play of the fourth quarter. Burick then found junior tight end Kolton Loy wide open in the far left corner of the endzone for the two-point conversion to cut the Louisville deficit to 41-8 with 11:32 remaining in the game.

Issue 34 Levy AdBurick would account for 135 of the Leopards 246 total yards of offense. He was Louisville’s leading rusher with 12 carries for 47 yards. Burick also completed 10 of 22 passes for 88 yards. Hershey was his top target with 4 catches for 66 yards. Junior runningback Cam Dougherty also had 4 catches for 26 yards and senior wide receiver Tate Golden made 5 grabs for 25 yards.


Manning Throws for 3 Touchdowns in 1st Half

Senior quarterback Aydan Manning finished 8 of 10 passing for 130 yards and threw 3 touchdowns in the opening half to lead the Big Red. Manning threw a screen pass to senior wide receiver Lee Anthony Sewell that went for a 9 yard touchdown on Steubenville’s opening 3 play, 48 yard drive. He later connected with senior wide receiver Isaac Hill on touchdown passes from 27 and 51 yards out. Hill would finish as the Big Red’s top receiver with 4 receptions for 97 yards.


Loy and Hawk Recover Fumbles for LHS

My Fit Life Personal Trainer Side AdThe Leopards failed to convert a 4th-and-4 from their own 38 on their second drive of the game. However, Steubenville fumbled in the backfield on the next play and Loy fell on it for Louisville at the SHS 33. The Leopards were unable to capitalize on the field position going four-and-out. 

Four of the game’s five turnovers would come in the second quarter resulting in the Big Red building a 35-0 halftime lead. Junior outside linebacker Jalen Minniefield intercepted a pass near the home sideline to setup Steubenville at the Louisville 29. On third-and-8 the Big Red put the ball on the turf and Brady Hawk recovered it for the Leopards at the SHS 30 yard line.


Big Red Open Up 35-0 1st Half Lead

Senior runningback Savier Faulks ran right, untouched into the endzone on the next play to increse the Steubenville advantage to 28-0. Faulks would finish with 5 carries for 63 yards.

Louisville drove into Big Red territory on the next drive before a 3rd-and-10 pass was intercepted. The ball founds the hands of senior defensive back Lawson Lewis who ran the pick back 16 yards into Leopard territory at the 48 yard line. Five plays later, sophomore runningback Ca’Jaun Bryant scored on a 10 yard touchdown run to extend the Steubenville advantage to 35-0 with 40 seconds to play before halftime.


Simmons Leads Steubenville on the Ground

Junior fullback Kail Simmons was Steubenville’s leading rusher with 3 carries for 86 yards. He broke loose for a 76 yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the third quarter for the Big Red’s only score of the second half. With the score 41-0, Steubenville took a knee on the extra point attempt.

The Big Red needed just 31 plays to rack up 305 yards and 6 touchdowns on offense. In comparison, the Leopards ran more than twice as many plays with 63 snaps for 246 yards and a touchdown. Louisville also held a 15-8 edge in first downs.

The Leopards are now 0-2 against the Big Red all-time. Louisville was shutout at Steubenville 21-0 in the season opener last season.
