The Louisville Leopards Football Team defeated the host Boardman Spartans 19-7 Friday Evening at Spartan Stadium.
Leopards Score on Long-Sustained Opening Drive
Louisville held the ball for 7:07 on their opening drive to begin Friday’s scrimmage. Runningback Cam Dougherty ran for 8 yards on a 3rd-and-1 to keep the drive alive early on. Wide receiver Quin Burick also hauled in 3 receptions as the Leopards marched down the field.
In goal-to-go, quarterback Tate Aljancic found runningback Owen DiMarzio for a 10 yard touchdown pass to put Louisville on the board first. The extra point attempt failed leaving the Leopards ahead 6-0 with 4:53 remaining in the opening quarter.
Boardman Strikes Back
Louisville’s defense looked to have Boardman stopped in their own territory on the ensuing Spartan drive. However, Boardman was able to convert a 4th-and-4 with a 60 yard touchdown reception to tie the game up.
The Spartans’ extra point attempt was true giving Boardman a 7-6 advantage late in the first period.
Dougherty & DiMarzio Score on the Ground
The Leopards wasted no time in responding to the Spartans trip to the endzone with a journey to pay dirt themselves. Louisville was aided by an unsportsmanlike penalty during the kickoff which allowed them to start their second drive from midfield.
A few plays later, Aljancic found Burick for a 30 yard gain to set the Leopards up 1st-and-goal at the 5 yard line. Dougherty carried the ball into the endzone from there putting Louisville back in front. Their two-point conversion attempt proved unsuccessful and the score remained 12-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Leopards defense forced a punt on the Spartans next drive to begin the second quarter. Louisville’s offense continued to move the ball and capped off their next drive with an 8 yard touchdown run by DiMarzio. Aljancic booted through the extra point to put the Leopards in command 19-7 with 2:30 remaining in the scrimmage.
Nicholson Slams the Door to End Scrimmage
An interception late in the half setup Boardman with a prime opportunity to score. With 13 seconds left and no timeouts remaining, the Spartans dropped back to pass from the Louisville 13 yard line. However, Leopard defensive lineman Josh Nicholson stormed in for the sack to end the threat and time ran out on the final dress rehearsal.
UP NEXT: The Leopards will next host the New Philadelphia Quakers for the season opener on Friday, August 23. Game time is set for 7:00 PM from Louisville Leopards Stadium.
