Lady Leopards Opener Spoiled by Blue Streaks 5-3 – Softball
Lake 5, Louisville 3
The Louisville Leopards Varsity Softball Team fell to the visiting Lake Blue Streaks 5-3 in their season opener early Saturday Morning at the Diamond of Dreams.
Trailing 5-0, the Lady Leopards scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut into the deficit. Alex Fankhauser battled to a full count before reaching on an error on a fly ball to left field. Since there were two outs, both runners were able to easily score as Lexi Zavarelle came home from third and Teagan Rice made the trip in from second. Kaylee Nolte smacked a line drive double to left on the next pitch which plated courtesy runner Ashley Zifer from second to make it 5-3.
Louisville was unable to get any closer during a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh and Lake avenged their stunning District Semifinal loss to the Leopards from last season.
It was 9 up and 9 down for the Lady Streaks through the first three innings. The script changed in the fourth inning when the Blue Streaks sent 8 to the plate and produced 4 runs. Jessica Lebeau doubled and then came home when Madison Dudek reached via an error to break the stalemate. Emily Lippe followed with a double that knocked in Dudek. Maggie Pertee also reached on an error allowing Dudek to score. Finally, Caitlin Lohse hit a 2-out single to left brining in Pertee. Lohse would finish 2-for-3 to lead Lake.
The Blue Streaks tacked on to their advantage when Dudek delivered a 2-out double in the fifth that brought home Lauren McMillin to give Lake a commanding 5-0 lead.
Starter Shae Thomas pitched 6 innings, surrendered 2 earned runs on 8 hits, and struck out 1 in a losing effort. Sarah Cantley pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning and struck out 2.
LeBeau pitched a complete game for the Blue Streaks in allowing no earned runs on 4 hits and striking out 10.
Lake leads the all-time series 31-19 and holds a 15-9 mark in games played at Louisville. Despite the historical lead in the series, this is only the Lady Streaks second win over the Lady Leopards in their past 9 meetings.
UP NEXT: The Louisville Leopards Softball Team will next host the Warren Champion Flashes on Saturday, March 30 at 1:00 PM in the third game of a triple header at the Diamond of Dreams.
