CHANDLER RICE 2-RUN HOMER

Game 1: Jackson 8, Louisville 7

Jackson used a 3-run sixth inning to stun the Leopards by the count of  8-7 in game one of a double header aat Jackson High School Saturday.

After leaving the bases loaded in the first inning, the Leopards tallied three runs in the second frame.  Jordan Monnot walked and then stole second base to get into scoring position.  Two batters later, Carlee Baumgardner singled her home for the first score of the day.  Brittany Flanigan walked after that and Emily Isla followed.  Isla reached base via an error and consequently Baumgardner scored on the play.  Flanigan, who reached third on the previous play, then scored on a wild pitch to put Louisville ahead 3-0.

Jackson answered back with four unanswered runs in the next three innings.  Amy Schmidt singled home Madi Jordan to remove the bagel from the Polar Bears’ side of the scoreboard.  However, a clutch 4-3-2 double play by the Leopards ended any additional threats in the bottom of the second.  The culprits responsible for the twin-killing included Chandler Rice, Monnot, and Isla.

Missed opportunities by Louisville kept Jackson in the game.  A dropped pop-up allowed both Kelsey Putman and Kristen Bader to score for the Polar Bears, rather than ending the third inning with no harm done.  Also, Louisville’s offense left the bases loaded in the first and third innings without adding a run to their score.

Jackson took their first lead of the contest when Putman blazed a grounder through the right side of the infield that scored Autumn Heaton.  4-3 Jackson.

After trailing for the first time Louisville responded with a 4-run fifth inning.  Annie Woolf was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game for the Lady Leps first baserunner of the inning. Following that, a 4-3 groundout advanced Woolf to second with two down.  Then Monnot brought home Woolf on a single to right-center to tie the game at 4-4.

Gianna Falcone followed by helping her own cause with a warning track blast that landed by the fence in right-center.  The double easily scored Monnot to give the lead back to Louisville.  Baumgardner then hit a screaming line drive to left that advanced a diving Falcone to third base.  Next, Flanigan grounded to short and would have been the final out of the inning.  However, the first baseman could not field the relay throw cleanly allowing both Falcone and a sliding Baumgardner to come across the plate.  7-4 Leopards.

Jackson cut the lead to two runs when Heaton singled home Jordan in the fifth inning.  Then an avalanche erupted for the Polar Bears in the sixth.  Kate Warne blasted a double that one-hopped the fence in right center.  Bader and Abby Funk scored on the play to tied the game at 7-7.  Then a weakly hit ball to the shallow left side of the infield by Erin Durbin turned into disaster for the Leopards.  Durbin was called safe on a bang-bang throw to first and it allowed Funk to step across the plate for the go-ahead run.  8-7 Jackson.

Hoover rifled her third hit of the game in the top of the seventh, but the Lady Leps could not bring her home for the tying run.  The 8-7 Jackson victory was Louisville’s third loss of the year, all to Federal League teams.

Game 2: Louisville 8, Jackson 4

Louisville pounded out five runs in the top of the first inning and fought through the rain to hold off a late Jackson rally in winning 8-4.  Rice hit a two-run homer, Monnot cracked a 2-run single, and Hoover went 3-for-4 and scored 3 runs to lead the Leopards.
Louisville wasted no time in taking out their frustrations from the first game in the first inning of the second game.  Beatty's Sports Spring Sports Logos SoftballFlanigan singled aboard to lead-off the game and Isla replaced her at first after a fielder’s choice.  Then Katie Cozy doubled off the wall in center field to bring home Isla to make it 1-0 Louisville.

Next, Rice elevated a mammoth 2-run blast to center that cleared the center field wall as well as the spectators behind it.  It was Rice’s third homer of the year and it brought home both her and Cozy to put the Leps up 3-0.

Woolf drew a walk and then Hoover stayed hot with a double to center to put both her and Woolf in scoring position.  Monnot delivered a 2-run single to bring both baserunners home after that and just like that Louisville had a 5-0 advantage at the end of the first.

Jackson tacked on a run in the bottom of the second when Jordan and Warne cracked back-to-back doubles.  However, Louisville countered with two more runs in the top of the third.  Hoover lined a shot up the middle to start the inning and then scored when Brooke Cox smashed a double to right-center.  Then, Jackson could not complete the throw to first on a bunt by Baumgardner allowing Cox to score from second.  7-1 Lady Leopards led after three.

In the circle, Flanigan shut down the Polar Bears the next two innings and struck out 7 Jackson hitters for the game.  Then, her single to right in the fifth inning brought home Hoover for the third time in the game to give Louisville an 8-1 cushion.

Jackson tacked on three more runs in the later innings as the rain started to fall harder.  But the girls got threw all seven innings and Louisville held on for an 8-4 win to move to 12-3 on the year.
