Salem Quakers at Louisville Leopards Girls Basketball 2011
Louisville 61, Salem 25
One game removed from a frustrating loss at West Branch, the Lady Leopards responded with their most complete game of the season. Louisville jumped out to a 19-2 lead and their defense, who held the Salem Quakers to just 4 points in the second half, did the rest in a 61-25 blowout. Molly Brown, Clara Lemmon, and Mackenzie Storlie each led the victorious Leopards with 12 points each.
The Lady Leps were eager to get back on their home court and their desire to get back to firing on all cylinders came to fruition in the opening period. It wasn’t perfect, but by crashing the boards second chance opportunities were created. Storlie and Lemmon combined for 16 of Louisville’s 25 first quarter points as the Lady Leopards flexed their muscle against a less tested Salem team.
One thing that was perfect was Louisville’s free throw shooting as the Leps made all 8 of their attempts in the first half. After leading 25-6 at the end of the first quarter, Salem fought back but could never shrink the lead under double digits for the remainder of the half. Louisville took a 38-21 lead into the break.
The Lady Leps froze the Quakers score at 21 for over 11 minutes, which included the entire third quarter. In fact, the Lady Quakers drought from the field lasted 15:17 before C. Davidson scored with 5:18 remaining in the game. The Louisville defense frustrated Salem all night long as the Quakers unofficially shot 12% (5 of 43) from the field and hit just 1 of 20 shots from beyond the arch.
Louisville outscored Salem 23-4 in a physical second half that featured minutes from every Lady Leopard player off the bench. This game should prove to be a confidence builder for Louisville; and with West Branch losing to Marlington Wednesday Night 58-42, they once again control their destiny in the NBC.
