Louisville struck quickly in the third quarter, extending their lead to 14-3. Tate Aljancic connected with Quin Burick for a 21-yard touchdown pass on 4th-and-12 to cap off a 7-play, 38-yard drive. Aljancic’s extra point made it 14-3 with 7:02 remaining in the third quarter.
Canfield responded late in the quarter. Enzo Cocca ran through the middle of the line and broke free for a 41-yard touchdown run. The Cardinals failed to convert the extra point, leaving the Leopards with a 14-9 lead heading into the final quarter.
4th Quarter: Turnovers Prove Costly for Louisville
The fourth quarter saw Canfield capitalize on Louisville mistakes. Early in the quarter, Adam Christy scooped up a fumble and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown. Cocca added a two-point run to give Canfield a 17-14 lead with 11:49 left in the game.
Later in the fourth, the Leopard defense stopped the Cardinals on a 4th-and-2 and Louisville took over on its own 19. The Leopards drove into Canfield territory and eventually turned the ball over on downs.
The Cardinals managed to run out all but a few seconds on the clock. Canfield punter Adam Christie took the snap and ran out of the back of the endzone for an intentional safety in leaving just 1.5 seconds on the clock.
Down 17-16, the Leopards made several laterals in an attempt to break loose for a miracle score. Instead, they continued to go backward before Carson Cutrer intercepted a lateral for a 5 yard fumble return touchdown to end the game 23-16 in favor of Canfield.
