Game Stats | Scoring Summary | Team Stats | Individual Stats
Aljancic Throws for 221 Yards & 2 Touchdowns
Quarterback Tate Aljancic was 18 of 26 passing for 221 yards and threw 2 touchdown passes to lead the Leopard offense. Runningback Owen DiMarzio also accounted for 107 yards of offense which included 16 carries for 75 yards and 3 catches for 32 yards.
Aljancic hit wide receiver Ashton Marshall in the left corner of the endzone for a 30 yard go ahead touchdown that put Louisville ahead 7-3 with 4:37 remaining in the second quarter. Marshall would finish as the game’s leading receiver with 4 receptions for 58 yards.
Trailing 16-7 late in the fourth quarter, Aljancic found tight end Austin Wade on the left side of the endzone for an 11 yard touchdown pass. That score got the Leopards to within 16-13 with 2:44 left in the contest.
Wade would finish with 2 catches for 45 yards. Wide receiver Quin Burick also made 3 grabs for 43 yards and wide receiver Gabe Stoffer made 3 receptions for 27 yards.
Dolph Runs for 120 Yards and Touchdown
Louisville finished with a 290-277 edged in total yards, but the Vikings out-rushed the Leopards 239-69 on the ground. Runningback AJ Dolph led the Hoover ground attack with 27 carries for 120 yards while scoring the Vikings only first half touchdown.
North Canton responded to Louisville’s only lead of the game with a 5 play, 53 yard drive that featured all runs. An unsportsmanlike penalty against the Leopards forced LHS to kickoff from its own 25 allowing the Vikings to begin from their own 47, following a 25 yard kick return by Drake Cooper. Dolph ran for 41 yards on the drive and fellow runningback Christian Friel also had a 12 yard first down run on the series. Dolph broke free for a 17 yard touchdown run to end the drive giving Hoover the lead just 2:01 after Louisville went in front 7-3.
The extra point clanged hard off the right upright and the score remained 9-7 Vikings with 2:36 to play before half.
Leopards Defense Holds on 4th-and-1
Hoover continued to pound the ball and drain the clock in the second half. Their opening third quarter drive featured 8 runs in 9 plays as they traveled to the Leopard 23 yard line. The only exception was a 27 yard pass completion from quarterback John Collins to Cooper that converted a 3rd-and-7 across midfield.
On 4th-and-1 from the LHS 23, linebacker Jacob Galbraith bust through the line to get the first hit on Dolph. Defensive lineman Josh Nicholson was clearly being held on the play, but stood his ground anyways and Dolph ran into him like a brick wall. Linebacker Cam Dougherty then pushed Dolph from his right side and he spun left hitting the turf on the line of scrimmage. The refs brought forth the chains and the ball was well short of the line to gain much to the delight of the Louisville faithful.
Louisville Comes Up Empty on 3rd Quarter Drive
The Leopards seized momentum and moved the ball down the field looking to retake the lead. Aljancic hit Marshall for an 11 yard completion on 3rd-and-6. Hoover then bailed out Louisville with a 15 yard personal foul that took the place of what would have been a 3rd-and-10 scenario. DiMarzio also ran for a first down and Aljancic found wide receiver Kolton Loy near the right sideline to convert a 3rd-and-6 to the Viking 19.
Louisville’s promising drive stalled after that and they elected to kick a 31 yard field goal on 4th-and-5. Aljancic’s kick sailed just left of the upright leaving the score 9-7 in favor of North Canton.
Collins Finishes Off 18 Play, 80 Yard Drive
The Vikings started with the ball with 55 seconds remaining in the third quarter and didn’t give it back until 3:33 remaining in the game. The 18 play, 80 yard scoring drive milked 9:22 off the game clock and featured 4 third down conversions.
Dolph moved the sticks twice on 3rd-and-1 runs to begin the series. Collins also ran for 11 yards on 3rd-and-4 to put Hoover at the LHS 22. Collins mishandled the snap two plays later for a 4 yard loss. However, he made up for it with a 16 yard scamper that converted a 3rd-and-12 to put the Vikings in goal-to-go.
On 4th-and-goal, Collins scored from a yard out behind center Samuel Gorman while receiving a “tush push” from fullback Cole Rembielak. Collins would finish with 10 carries for 41 yards on the night.
Paul Koskovich, who earlier in the first quarter hit a 31 yard field goal, converted the extra point to make it a two score contest at 16-7 with 3:33 remaining.
Louisville Answers in Just 49 Seconds
Louisville began from its own 20 after a touchback and stormed down the field in just 3 plays. DiMarzio drew a pass interference on the first snap of the drive. Aljancic then hit the outstretch hands of tight end Austin Wade at midfield and Wade trucked into Hoover territory for a 34 yard gain. Aljancic then found DiMarzio down the left sideline for another chunk play of 25 yards to the Viking 6.
After a false start, Aljancic connected with Wade over top a Hoover defender near the left side of the endzone. Wade toe-tapped both feet in scoring the 11 yard touchdown with 2:44 to play. The extra point missed wide left leaving the score 16-13.
Rembielak Seals the Game for Hoover
The Leopards attempted an onside kick but it was covered up by Carson Morris at the 50 yard line.
Friel broke free for a 45 yard run on the first play of scrimmage to set North Canton up with another goal to go. Friel would end the evening with 8 rushing attempts for 82 yards for Hoover.
On third-and-goal, Rembielak leaped over the line and into the endzone from 2 yards out to put the Vikings back in front by two scores. Koskovich made the extra point to extend the lead to 23-13 with 1:24 remaining.
Leopards Make it Interesting Late
Louisville journeyed 58 yards on their final 9 play drive. Aljancic hit Stoffer for a 17 yard completion to start the series. Aljancic would then find Burick for 3 first down completions netting 43 yards with the last a 22 yard reception that took the Leopards down to the Viking 22.
On first down, and needing points quickly, Louisville elected to kick a 39 yard field goal. Aljancic split the uprights to get the Leopards to within 23-16 with 10 seconds left.
However, Rembielak recovered the ensuing onside kick and North Canton prevailed.
Hoover Wins 5th Straight in Rivalry
The Vikings have now defeated the Leopards in 5 consecutive meetings matching their longest winning streak in the rivalry. North Canton also won 5 straight games against Louisville from 1982-1986.
The Leopards still lead the all-time series 56-41-5 dating back to their first official meeting in 1924. Louisville also still holds a 25-24-2 edge in game’s played at North Canton in the series, but have dropped their last 8 matchups at Memorial Stadium. The Leopards last win at Hoover was a 22-0 shutout back on August 29, 2008.
