Louisville Leopards at Canfield Cardinals Softball 2012 Recap

Louisville 14, Canfield 11

Shelby Swigert went 3-for-3 with 4 RBI’s and hit a game-tying 2-run single in the top of the seventh to keep the Leopards alive before their eventual 14-11 wild win over the Canfield Cardinals Wednesday evening.  Emily Isla also went 2-for-2 and scored 4 runs and Katie Cozy went 3-for-5 with two doubles and 2 RBI’s to lead the 17-3 Leopards.

After Swigert’s single tied the game at 10-10 in the seventh, Amy Hoover cracked a 2-out RBI single that brought home Annie Woolf for the go-ahead run.  Canfield then tied the game back up in the bottom half of the seventh, but left the winning run stranded at third as Louisville forced extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Isla started the inning by walking for the third straight time.  Cozy then banged out her third hit in three at-bats sending home Isla on her RBI triple.  Chandler Rice then drove home Cozy to put Louisville up 13-11.  Rice finished the evening with two RBI’s and scored three runs previously.  After a pair of walks, Swigert took home on a wild pitch to give Louisville an additional insurance run that would eventually make up the final score at 14-11.

Believe it or not, runs came at a premium earlier in the contest as the game remained scoreless through the first three innings.  Louisville took a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run single by Swigert, Woolf scoring on a wild pitch, and Gianna Falcone driving home a run via a double.  The Cardinals responded by cutting the lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Lady Leopards then tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth.  Cozy cracked a double that advanced Isla to third.  Then Rice drove home Isla and Woolf drove home Cozy for two more runs.  Additionally, Rice took home on a wild pitch to leave the score at 7-2 Louisville in the middle of the fifth.

Canfield scored 8 unanswered runs during the next two innings which was propelled by two home runs.  But even down 10-7 heading into the seventh, the Lady Leps remained confident.  Isla walked, Cozy singled, and Rice walked to load the bases with no outs.  Then Woolf was hit by a pitch bringing home Isla to leave Louisville down just two runs.  That’s when Swigert delivered her game-tying blow.

The Lady Leopards are now winners of six straight and will travel to Minerva on Thursday looking for their tenth NBC win.
