Leopards Rally Past Nemesis West Branch to Go Back-to-Back – Baseball
Louisville 5, West Branch 3
The Louisville Leopards Varsity Baseball Team rallied from a 3-run hole to defeat the visiting West Branch Warriors 5-3 Thursday Evening at the Field of Dreams. With the win, Louisville improves to 20-7 overall and clinches a share of their second straight NBC Championship with a 12-1 mark in conference play.
Trailing 3-0, the Leopards scored 5 times in the fifth and sixth to take the game. With 2 outs and 2 on in the bottom of the fifth, Cam King put Louisville on the board with a line drive 2-run double to right field scoring Dillon English from third and Bryce Zuppe from first. Four pitches later, Davis Burick tripled to center bringing home King for the game-tying run.
The Leopards picked up right where they left off in the bottom of the sixth. Dillon Rebuck led off the inning with an infield single. Then Cam Lingle doubled on a hard ground ball to center scoring Rebuck for the go-ahead run. Lingle would lead Louisville with 2 of their 7 hits. He then came home on Dillon English’s sacrifice fly for an added insurance run making it 5-3.
On the mound, Andrew Gray went the distance in pitching all 7 innings, giving up 2 earned runs on 7 hits, and striking out 10. Jon Snyder doubled home Seth Schroeder for the Warriors with 2 outs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-0. West Branch failed to obtain another baserunner the rest of the way as Gray retired the final 7 Warriors batters. He fanned 4 in the process which included striking out the side in the seventh.
Snyder batted 2-for-3 at the dish to lead West Branch (19-6, 10-2). Tyler DeShields and Jake Lyons both had RBI singles and Schroeder scored a pair of runs for the Warriors as well.
The win snaps West Branch’s 7-game winning streak over the Leopards. Louisville’s last victory over the Warriors came in the season finale in a 7-4 home win back on May 22, 2014.
The Leopard s have now passed Marlington for the second most NBC Baseball Championships won with 7. Only Canton South has more NBC Baseball Titles with 8. Louisville will travel to Canton South on Saturday to finish their suspended game with the Wildcats. A victory in that contest would give the Leopards their first Outright league crown since 2011.
