West Branch 56, Louisville 41

The Warriors hit 6 three-pointers en route to a convincing 56-41 victory over the Lady Leps at the West Branch Field House Saturday afternoon.  Brianna Libertore scored a season-high 21 points to lead Louisville, while Mackenzie Storlie also added 10.

If the village of Beloit didn’t have a downtown previously, it built one in the first quarter of Saturday’s contest.  Senior Rebekah Zets canned two three-balls and Freshman Melinda Trimmer blazed home another to give the Warriors a 14-9 lead after the first eight minutes of the game.  Zets scored 9 of her 14 points on the night in the first period.

The Lady Leps began to battle back in the second quarter by working the ball to Libertore.  She ended up scoring 11 of Louisville’s 13 points in the second period, made two layups while being fouled, and shot 5 of 8 from the charity stride in the quarter.  The Leopards tied the game at 22-22, but failed to take the lead as West Branch held an advantage by the slimmest possible margin heading into the locker room.

The Lady Warriors charged out of the locker room to score the first five points of the second half.  A Zets three-ball and a Taryn Hahn transition basket put West Branch up 28-22.  Angela Risaliti cut the deficit in half with a triple from the right corner, but Brittany Bryte countered with two three-pointers of her own.  Her second from make from beyond the arch gave West Branch a double-digit lead, but Storlie’s buzzer beating three-pointer gave Louisville hope heading into the fourth.

In the final period, Libertore hit a deep two-pointer to cut the lead to 39-34, but that was as close as the Leopards would get.  The Lady Warriors nailed the coffin shut by bursting out to a 7-0 run and hitting home 11 of 12 free throws.  Trimmer was 8 of 8 from the line and scored 10 of her game-high 16 points in the final six minutes to help put away the Leps.  West Branch had built their largest lead of the game, which was finalized at 56-41.

Even with the West Branch student section in an uproar, Emily Nees swished home 4 free throws in the final 29.7 seconds to help Louisville hand the West Branch JV squad their first loss of the season.  Hollyann Mullett led the Leps with 9 points and Nees finished with 8.

Warrior Freshman Ericka Johnson hit a three-pointer with 37.7 seconds remaining to cut the Louisville lead to 31-30, before Nees hit two free throws.  She then cut the lead to one again on a layup, before Nees put Louisville up by 35-32.  Johnson finished with a game-high 13 points for West Branch.

The Warriors finished just 13 of 34 from the charity stride, while Louisville flushed home 13 of 17 from the free throw line.
