Schaffer Takes 6th, Castro 7th at Ironman Tournament – Wrestling

The Louisville Leopards Wrestling Team competed at the Walsh Jesuit Ironman Tournament Friday and Saturday at Walsh Jesuit High School. Louisville finished with 46.5 team points to place 23rd out of 103 competing schools.
Seniors Pablo Castro (132) and Blake Schaffer (190) both scored 11 team points to lead the Leopards.
The Blair Academy Buccaneers out of New Jersey were the team champions with 176.5 team points and the Malvern Prep Frairs out of Pennsylvania finished as team runner-up with 137 team points. The St. Paris Graham Falcons were Ohio’s best in taking sixth place and the Lakewood St. Edward Eagles also placed ninth.

Castro Overcomes Early Setback to Take 7th
Castro suffered an early setback and battled back through consolation to finish in 7th place. He lost in sudden victory against Braden Basile (Tampa Jesuit) in his second match of the tournament. Castro responded by winning in sudden victory against both Ashton Campbell (Bethleman Catholic) and Brandan Chletsos (Notre Dame). He followed those wins with a close 3-2 decision against Logan Rozynski (Wyoming Seminary) to guarantee placement.
Castro dropped a 5-2 decision against Christopher Martino (Bishop Kelly) to fall to the 132 seventh place match. There he claimed victory through default when Joshua Neiwert (Gonzaga Preparatory School) sustained an injury.
Schaffer Advances to Quarterfinals, Places 6th
Schaffer dropped a hard fought decision in the 190 championship quarterfinals and also wrestled his way back through consolation to finish in 6th place. Schaffer punched his ticket to the quarterfinals with a tie breaker win over Jack Wehmeyer, a wrestler from team champion Malvern Prep. In the championship quarterfinals, Schaffer lost a 5-3 decision to Hayden Walters (Crescent Valley).
Schaffer wrestled his way back into the consolation semifinals after shutting out the opposition with back-to-back 3-0 decisions against Kinglsey Menifee (Fauquier) and Andrew Donahue (Olentangy Liberty). Schaffer dropped a 4-2 decision to Seth Shumate (Dublin Coffman) in the consolation semifinals and then lost by 5-2 decision to Stephen Little (Union County) in the 190 5th place match.
Brazek Records Back-to-Back Pins
Louisville Senior Cameron Brazek (285) didn’t place, but finished with a winning mark of 3-2. After falling in his second match, Brazek earned back-to-back pins against Mitchell Mason (Reynolds) and Joey Scaly (Highland). He was the only Leopard to win by fall twice during the tournament.
Altogether eight Louisville wrestlers complied a combined winning duel record of 18-17 in one of the most prestigious tournaments in the country.
