SOFTBALL

Carrollton 7, Louisville 1

A strange feel filled the Diamond at Louisville High School as the Warriors  players hustled off the field in victory. Something felt…incomplete, unfinished as the Lady Leopards were handed their first loss in the NBC in two seasons a 7-1 thumping by Carrollton.

If you thought the ending felt weird, how about the delayed start? Only one umpire showed up for the varsity game which delayed the opening pitch about twenty minutes.  The two squads were forced to pull the umpire from the junior varsity game to assume duties, which denied the two JV squads play.  It was suggested that all the rain-outs and rescheduling of games had something to do with the umpire being unavailable.

A pitcher’s duel ensued through the first four and a half innings.  Gianna Falcone started for Louisville against Carrollton’s Tanner Owens.  Falcone pitched the first four innings before being pulled for Leopards ace Brittany Flanigan in the top of the fifth.

Flanigan, who had not expected to play in the game, came in after little warm-up during the tight contest.  She shutout the Warriors like normal in the top of the fifth and  the Leopards managed a small ball run by stealing home in the bottom of the inning to take a lead by the slimmest of margins.

After that, the Warriors shelled her for the next two innings as snowball events quickly turned into an avalanche of seven Carrollton runs.  The Warriors loaded the bases and Flanigan bobbled a grounder before throwing to the plate for the force that was not in time.  During her time on the mound, her hip seemed to be bothering her, but that wasn’t the only issue she faced as she had to successfully locate what appeared to be a tightened strikezone.  This led to Carrollton scoring on a base on balls with the bases loaded to give them a 2-1 lead and then things really came undone as two more Carrollton runners came home on a base hit.  The Warriors would also grab three more in the seventh to put the game out of reach and hand Flanigan her first loss of the season.

Louisville got a few runners aboard in the sixth and seventh inning, but couldn’t bring any around around. Carlee Baumgardner led the Leopards with two hits.  If the weather holds up Louisville play five games in four days starting today at Alliance, Friday at Marlington, and a double header at home against Jackson Saturday.
