The Louisville Leopards Boys Golf Team opened up the 2020 season by competing against 16 other Division I teams at the Tannenhauf Invitational Friday at Tannenhauf Golf Club. Louisville shot 363 as a team to take 7th for the tournament.
Freshman Jack Mayle led the Leopards by shooting a team low 8 over par 80 in his varsity debut. He finished in a 5-way tie for 10th place individually in Division I.
Senior Ryan Aljancic and Sophomore Sam Karcher both carded a 93. Freshman Zach Root and Junior Anthony Warner tied for the fourth best LHS score in tallying 97 each.
“I love listening to each of them talk about what they will focus on improving after their rounds today. This group is never satisfied and always looks for ways to improve. We are very young this year, with 1 senior, 1 junior, 1 sophomore, and 3 freshmen making up our initial varsity roster, but with the talent these boys have, I can’t wait to watch all of these guys push each other throughout the season.”
– Louisville Leopards Head Coach Mike McFerren
The Leopards shot 373 and finished 14th after competing well into the evening during last year’s Tannenhauf Invitational. They improved upon that mark by 10 strokes Friday.
The St. Ignatius Wildcats won the Division I tournament with a team score of 307 well ahead of the second place Jackson Polar Bears who shot 319. The Wildcats dominated as four of their golfers finished in the top 6 scores. Sean Hoagland earned tournament medalist by shooting 2 over par 74 and M.J. Myers shot 4 over par 76 to lead the way.
St. Ignatius will have to wait awhile before dominating on the green again. Shortly after the tournament ended, the high school suspended all athletics and extracurricular activities through September 8 after a number of their student athletes recently tested positive for COVID-19.
UP NEXT: The Leopards will next compete at the Tannenhauf Invitational on Friday, August 7. Tee-time is set for 7:30 AM from Tannenhauf Golf Club.
