Softball Erupts in Mercy Win Over Salem 13-2
Louisville 13, Salem 2, 5 Innings
The Louisville Lady Leopards erupted for a run-rule 13-2 victory in 5 innings over the visiting Salem Quakers Friday at LHS. With the victory, the Lady Leopards improve to 5-4 overall and 5-0 in NBC play.
Kylie Zifer went 2-for-4 at the plate with a 3-run triple and a 2-run home run to lead the Lady Leopards. Katie Cozy also batted 2-for-4 with a double and a game-ending walk-off 2-run bomb to center.
Louisville as a team has homered 10 times in 9 games. Cozy’s walk-off was the third of her Leopard career. She also hit game-ending homers against Alliance in 2012 and Hudson in 2013. With the home run, Cozy also passes Desi Givens for second on the all-time LHS career home run list with 18. She trails only Chandler Rice for the school record of 20 career dingers.
The Quakers scored a run in each of the first two innings to grab the early advantage. This was particularly significant since Salem had been shutout 82-0 in the past 32 innings against Louisville. Reagan Meals led the game off with a triple and Haley Carner drove her home in the first. Meals would finish with 2 of the Quakers 5 hits in the game. In the second, Cassandra Burke drove in Katie Moore to put Salem up 2-0.
It was all Louisville after that. In the circle, Kirsten Wharmby shutout the Quakers the rest of the way to even her season record to 2-2. She also sent down 4 Salem batters and did not issue a single walk.
The Leopards offense produced 14 hits and 7 different Louisville batters drove in runs. Lexi Givens and Morgan Harris each had RBI doubles and Emily Cantley, Grace Jackson, & Peyton McKeever all had RBI singles. Both Givens and Cantley both had multi-hit games as well.
With the victory, the Lady Leopards are now 9-0 against the Lady Quakers all-time, which includes a 6-0 record at LHS in the all-time series. Louisville has now won by mercy against Salem in five innings in each of their last 6 meetings.
UP NEXT: The Lady Leopards will next host the GlenOak Golden Eagles in a double header on Saturday, April 18 beginning at 12:00 PM.
