Leopards Win District Title, Advance to State for 5th Straight Season – Wrestling

The Louisville Leopards Varsity Wrestling Team punched their ticket to the State Dual Tournament for the fifth straight season after a pair of victories at the OHSWCA District Dual Tournament held Saturday at Louisville High School.

The #3 seed Louisville Leopards upended the #6 seed Streetsboro Rockets 58-11 in the district semifinals to advance to the district championship. Meanwhile, the #7 seed Madison Blue Streaks were the beneficiaries of 6 forfeits as they upset the #2 seed St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish 45-31 to advance to the title match.

In the district final, Louisville defeated Madison 40-27 to claim the district championship. The Leopards are now 7-1 on the season and will compete with 7 other district winners at the OHSWCA State Dual Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, February 10 starting at 1:00 PM.

Louisville responded by winning the next five matches, which included taking four of them by fall. Freshman Kaiden Barker (113) and sophomore Colton Rhoads (120) claimed back-to-back pins to put the Leopards in front 12-6. Next, senior Kolten Barker (113) earned a hard fought 13-4 major decision against #30 ranked Jack Harrison to extend the Louisville lead to double digits. Freshman Aric Criss (132) and sophomore Beau Nezbeth (138) both made quick work of the opposition with first period pins as the Leopards took a commanding 28-9 advantage.

Madison’s next four wrestlers, all of which are ranked according to borofanohio.net, all won their matchups to cut the Blue Streak deficit to 28-24 heading into the 175 bout. Senior Addison Trisket (144) earned a 5-1 decision and senior Sonny Salajcik won by fall in 1:40. #13 ranked junior Izaiah Siler also won by a 14-0 major decision and #7 ranked senior Noah Blough earned a 15-0 technical fall to get Madison within four points. Credit to Louisville wrestlers: senior Tanner Frank (144), sophomore Abel Bolyard (157), and junior Blake Balderson (165) who battled hard against these ranked opponents to not surrender pins and keep the Leopards ahead of the Blue Streaks in the team score.

Junior Wyatt Smith (175) reset the tone for Louisville with a pin in just 32 seconds to put LHS back up by 10.

Equitable Advisors - Bryce MathieThen sophomore Micah Bricker (190) won the bout of the day by 9-7 decision in overtime. Bricker and Madison senior Demitry Navarro wrestled to a 7-7 tie at the end of the third period. Neither team scored in sudden victory or in tiebreaker I. In tiebreaker II, Navarro was penalized for locked hands with 10 seconds left to put Bricker ahead 8-7. Navarro surrendered an escape point to restart the action in neutral position. He was unable to to produce the match-tying takedown needed to force ultimate tiebreaker and Bricker prevailed 9-7. The victory put the Leopards up 37-24 with a pair of weight classes remaining and clinched their fifth straight state berth.

Sophomore Jakeb Beard (215) earned a 4-1 decision for Louisville. Sophomore Cam Mullins (285) claimed the heavyweight bout for Madison to conclude the tournament.

The Leopards surrendered the opening bout, but won the next five matches to pull ahead 25-4. Freshman Kaiden Barker (113) earned a 15-7 major decision to knot the dual at 4-4. Then sophomore Colton Rhoads (120) and senior Kolten Barker (126) each won by fall to put Louisville in the lead. Freshman Aric Criss (132) claimed a forfeit in the next bout and sophomore Beau Nezbeth (138) earned a 6-0 decision to give the Leopards a 21-point advantage.My Fit Life Personal Trainer Side Ad

The Leopards never looked back as they went ahead 34-11 on 10-3 decision by sophomore Luke Seaman (150) and a second period pin by junior Blake Balderson (165). Junior Wyatt Smith (175), sophomore Micah Bricker (190), and sophomore Jakeb Beard (215) next all claimed forfeits to clinch the match. Junior Ben Brendle (285) then won by fall with 13 seconds remaining in the first period to cap off 30 unanswered points by Louisville to close the dual.

Winners for the Rockets included freshman John Bollinger (106) by 15-3 major decision, #27 ranked senior Hunter Smith (144) by 2-1 decision, and #14 ranked junior Cohen Kilmak (157) by 9-0 major decision.
