Louisville 7, Minerva 1

The Louisville Leopards defeated the visiting Minerva Lions 7-1 Thursday Evening at the Diamond of Dreams. With the victory, Louisville remains unbeaten at 4-0 on the season which includes a 3-0 mark against the NBC.

Louisville Leopards Light Blue Hoodie Established 1924 - Beatty's Sports Fall 2017Lauren Bennett and Sarah Cantley drove in 3 runs a piece to lead the Leopards. Cantley batted a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI double in the first inning and a 2-run double in the seventh inning. Bennett batted 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the third and a 2-run single in the fifth. Kaycee Ollis and Shae Thomas each had multi-hit games for LHS as well.

Louisville out-hit Minerva 12-3 for the game as Leopard pitching continued to dominate in the circle. Thomas started the contest and retired the first 11 Lion batters she faced. She threw 4 innings, gave up 1 run on 2 hits, and struck out 2 on her way to her first career Varsity victory.

Cantley came on in relief during the fifth with a 3-1 LHS cushion. She struck out 5 and retired 9 of the 10 hitters she faced over the final three innings to earn her 4th career save.

The only run not driven in by the Leopards came in the opening inning. Sydney McKeever got aboard via a bunt single to lead off the frame. She then stole second and advanced to third when Teagan Rice bunted and reached base on an overthrow. Rice crept toward second and forced herself into a rundown allowing McKeever to round third and score. Rice also got out of the pickle and remained safe at first.

The Lions (3-3, 1-3) first base runner of the game didn’t come until Elyssa Imler hit a screaming 2-out line drive double off the fence in center. Amber Hume knocked her home on the next pitch on a ground ball single to right to trim the Leopard lead to 3-1. The Lions would manage just one more base runner on Aubrey Stanford’s single in the sixth.
