Leopards Pounce on Minutemen, Build Early 6-0 Lead
The Lady Leopards amassed a 6-0 lead midway through the second inning and never looked back. Leah Claugus led off with an infield single and entered scoring position after an overthrow. Two batters later, Claugus scored the first run of the game via a double by Anna Sirohman. Sirohman advanced to third after a ground out and then came home via an errant throw down to third by the Revere catcher.
Louisville tacked on four more runs via a pair of two-out, two-run singles in the top of the second inning to extend their advantage to 6-0. Sirohman came up big again with a single to left field that plated Taylor Schneider and Kaitlin Twinem. On the next pitch, Addy Campbell cracked a single to left field that brought home Claugus and Sirohman.
Claugus Registers 4 Hits
Claugus finished 4-for-5 and scored three runs at the top of the lineup as the Lady Leopards out-hit the Minutemen 12-9. Claugus also had an RBI single that scored Twinem to increase the Louisville advantage to 7-2 in the top of the fourth.
Sirohman also finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Taylor Thompson additionally registered a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Louisville Limits Damage as Revere Chips Away
Revere chipped away at the lead, but could only score a single run in the second, third, and fourth innings. Catherine Steiger’s two-out single scored Sydney Firca to get the Minutemen on the board in the bottom of the second. However, Steiger was tagged out by Twinem trying to advance to second, preventing further damage.
Alexa Kelley singled home Paige Kelley in the third inning to cut the Revere deficit to 6-2. But on the next Gayle Mishic lined out to Twinem at shortstop who threw to Thompson at first to pick off Alexa Kelley for a double play to end the frame.
Mattie Diaz also smacked a two-out double in the bottom of the fourth scoring Sarah Riley for Revere’s third run. Diaz and Kelley would finish with multi-hit games, 2-for-3 and 3-for-4 respectively.
Lady Leopards Weather Storm in 5th
The Lady Leopards weathered a storm in the fifth inning, both figuratively and literally with the elements. The cold, low-50s temperatures turned worse as rain began to fall at the Jefferson Little League Complex as the Minutemen attempted to mount a comeback.
Louisville pitcher Katelynn Miller issued a one-out, four pitch walk to Sydney Kreighbaum before Alexa Kelley hit a line drive double to center field, two pitches later. Kreighbaum scored on a wild pitch during the next at-bat. Then Mishic grounded to Twinem at short who threw home, but Alexa Kelley got a hand on the plate before Campbell could swipe for the tag making the score 7-5.
Miller won a seven-pitch battle in the next at-bat getting Firca to strike out swinging for the second out. Two batters later, Miller got Riley to strike out swinging to end a long fifth inning.
Miller would go on to earn the victory, throwing five innings, allowing 4 earned runs on 7 hits, walking 3, and striking out 6.
Griffith Delivers the Dagger with Homer in the 6th
The Lady Leopards answered with three key runs in the sixth to help secure the district championship. Claugus singled and Sirohman walked to start the inning. Then Campbell lined out to center field allowing each runner to move up a base. The throw from center field to try to gun down Claugus at third was short and skipped off the third baseman. Claugus slid into third, but immediately stood up, rushed home, and scored without a throw to the plate to make it 8-5.
Bailee Griffith batted next and blasted a two-run homer that just cleared the fence in center field to increase the Louisville advantage to 10-5. The home run was Griffith’s 12th of the season, tying her with Matti Benson for the second most in a single season only behind Campbell who has smashed 14 this season. Griffith celebrated as she rounded the bases, high-fived Head Coach Emily Brislen near third, and was mobbed by her teammates at home plate.
Kelley Hits Inside-The-Park Homer
Paige Kelley tripled on a fly ball to deep right field that scored Diaz from second. An error on the throw in allowed Kelley to score for a “little league” inside-the-park home run—fittingly at the Jefferson Little League Complex.
That trimmed the Leopard lead to 10-7, but the Minutemen would get no closer.
Schneider Slams the Door as Louisville Advances to Regionals
Taylor Schneider pitched the final two innings allowing 2 earned runs on 2 hits, walking a batter, and striking out 3. After surrendering two runs in the sixth, Schneider retired five of the final six batters she faced to close the game.
Schneider issued a 5-pitch walk to Mishic to begin the last of the seventh, but rebounded by striking out Firca looking on three pitches. Schneider continued to help her own cause by fielding a ground ball from Ashley Gardner and throwing to Thompson at first for the second out. Mishic advanced to second on the play and then to third on defensive indifference.
Schneider quickly got ahead of Riley with two foul balls to start the next at-bat. Two pitches later, Schneider struck out Riley swinging to clinch Louisville’s second district title in team history. Schneider hugged her battery mate, Campbell, and the rest of the Lady Leopards joined in the embrace.
Lady Leopards Win 2nd District Title in Team History
Both teams were celebrated in the postgame ceremonies, first Revere on their achievement of district runner-up.
Then the district champion plaque was presented to Coach Brislen and she also distributed district champion medals to each player. Brislen then gave the district champion plaque to senior Skylar Eckles, who held it to celebrate at the center of the team huddle.
The district title is only the second in team history with the only other district championship coming in Division I, a 1-0 win over Lake in 2019. Louisville is now 2-5 in district title games all-time, 12-16 when playing at neutral venues in the tournament, and 48-38 in the postseason overall.
Coach Brislen is the first Louisville Head Coach to win a district title in her first season since Jason Siegfried guided Leopards baseball to a district championship in his first year, 2009. Brislen and the Lady Leopards will have a shot to make history Wednesday afternoon when they take on the #10 seed Gilmour Academy Lancers at Kent State’s Devine Diamond for a chance to reach the regional finals for the second time in team history.
