Louisville Makes Case for High Seed After Downing Perry 6-1
Louisville 6, Perry 1
The Lady Leopards traveled to Perry Wednesday evening and came away with a 6-1 win over their Federal League foes. Louisville is now 14-2 on the season and with the victory makes a strong case to be awarded the second or third seed in the DI Massillon Sectional Tournament draw this Sunday.
Gianna Falcone picked up her 14th win of the year after another solid performance in the circle. She pitched the entire game allowing just 1 run and striking out 2.
Falcone was backed up by some excellent Leopards defense and a few breaks as well. In the fourth inning, the Panthers had a runner on first and laid down a bunt. Third Baseman Katie Cozy scooped up the grounder and gunned the ball to second to get the lead runner on a bang-bang play. The runner who had reached base would end up leaving early while trying to steal second in recording the second out of the inning.
Perry also threatened in the fifth inning when their first two batters got aboard via back-to-back singles. But a line out to Cozy and a quick throw to Amy Hoover at second flipped the scenario upside down. The threat had been vanquished and the third and final out came a few pitches later.
Louisville broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning when a Leopard mistake turned into good fortune. A missed suicide squeeze bunt attempt left Cozy dangerously leading off third base. However, the catcher’s throw ended up in left field and Cozy jogged home.
The Panthers knotted the game up at 1-1 in the fourth inning, but Louisville answered back with two runs in the fifth. Jordan Monnot nearly went yard to lead off the inning, but settled for a double. Then Grace Jackson reached base via an outfield error that put both runners into scoring position. Brooke Cox followed with a sac fly that scored Monnot and Hoover delivered an RBI single to left that brought home Jackson.
The Lady Leopards would tack on three more insurance runs over the final two innings to take a 6-1 advantage. Annie Woolf’s infield single in the sixth would score Swigert and also the speedy Chandler Rice who made it home from second on the play. Hoover’s sac bunt in the seventh allowed Jackson to score her second run of the contest as well. Jackson reached base via a double and then stole third base before coming home via Hoover’s sacrifice.
With the victory, Louisville has now won their last four games playing on the road at Perry. The Panthers lead the all-time series 20-6, but the Leopards have taken 5 of the last 8 overall.
