Nigro Pours in Game High 21 for Louisville
Senior guard Hayden Nigro scored 11 of his game high 21 points in the opening half to lead the Leopards. Junior forward Brayden Gross also finished with 14 of his 15 points in the second half and a team leading 7 rebounds. The Leopards came out of the gate strong with Siegfried cashing in on 3 three-pointers and Nigro scoring 7 in the opening quarter. Louisville took an 18-10 advantage into the second quarter and continued to maintain that advantage after a pair of Nigro free throws put them ahead 24-16 with 2:17 to play before halftime.
Eagles Take Control with Pair of Runs
St. Edward scored 9 unanswered to end the half in taking a stunning 25-24 lead into the break. Junior forward Ukize Nshungu got things started with a basket underneath and added a free throw on a later possession. Then senior point guard Joey Scarpitti hit back-to-back three-pointers to cap off the 9-0 run that took place in a span of just 68 seconds. Neither team scored in the final 56 seconds and the Eagles led by the slimmest of margins going into the half.
The two teams traded field goals to begin the half before Siegfried’s fourth three-pointer cut the Louisville deficit to 29-31. St. Edward would answer with a 10-0 run to take control of the game. The string began with a putback and was followed by a drive and score by senior guard Brian Sullivan. It ended with back-to-back three-pointers by senior guard Rick Bussey II and sophomore guard Bryan Vlosich to give the Eagles a double figure advantage at 41-31 .
St. Edward Makes 10 Three-Pointers
Gross went coast-to-cost out of a timeout to trim the Leopards disadvantage to single digits. But Scarpitti answered with his fourth three-pointer of the night to give St. Edward its largest advantage of the game at 44-33. The Eagles would maintain that lead heading to the fourth quarter after senior point guard Tavin Shaw scored on a buzzer beater from the free throw stride to end the third quarter at 48-39.
The Leopards chipped away at the St. Edward lead in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles had a response every time. When Louisville cut the deficit to 50-44, 6’6 senior forward Wendell Henry hit a three-pointer from the right wing to re-up the lead to 9. The Leopards battled back to get within 55-48, but Vlosich hit his second three-pointer from several feet beyond the arch to put St. Edward ahed by double digits once more.
Six different Eagles hit shots from long range in the game as St. Edward registered 10 three-pointers into the scorebook.
Louisville fought until the end. Nigro’s three-pointer from the right wing got the Leopards to within 60-55 with 6.9 seconds to play, but Louisville would run out of time in suffering their first defeat in seven weeks.
Sullivan Leads Eagles with Team High 15
Sullivan scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half to lead St. Edward. Scarpitti and Henry also both finished in double figures with 12.
The Eagles have now won 4 straight and improve to 10-5 overall on the season. St. Edward remains an unbeaten 7-0 at home on the year.
This was the first ever meeting between the Leopards and the Eagles in boys basketball. St. Edward is the 73rd unique opponent faced by Louisville since Tom Siegfried took over as head coach in 2007. LHS is now 44-29 during that span when facing an opponent for the first time, which includes an 8-12 record when that meeting comes on the opponents’ floor.
