Louisville ‘Upsets’ New Philadelphia on Hampe Overtime Goal

The #9 Seed Louisville Leopards Girls Soccer Team upset the #8 Seed New Philadelphia Quakers in overtime 2-1 during their DI Niles Sectional Semifinal matchup Monday Night at Southside Community Park in New Philadelphia. With the victory, Louisville improves to 9-5-2 on the season and advances to play at top seeded Jackson on Thursday, October 17 at 7:00 PM in the DI Niles Sectional Finals.

Senior Megan Hampe found the bottom right corner of the net from 35 yards out with 5:26 left to play in overtime to give the Lady Leopards their first tournament win since 2016. Hampe’s overtime score was the fourth golden goal in team history as Louisville improved to 4-0 all-time in overtime contests.

Leopards Strike First, Quakers Answer in 1st Half

Earlier in the first half Sophomore Morgan Keelan gave the Leopards the early lead with a goal in the 13th minute. Senior Jenny Hamsher provided the assist on the scoring play that gave Louisville a 1-0 advantage with 27:24 left in the opening half.

New Philadelphia (9-4-4) answered to tie the game at 1-1 eleven minutes later when Paige Kaiser found the back of the net for the Quakers.

Conditioning the Key to Leopards Victory

My Fit Life Personal Trainer AdDefense took over after that as neither team would score for the next 1:05:58 of game time. Leopards Head Coach John Henkel said after the win that conditioning played a big role in Louisville’s ability to control the ball in overtime.

The Leopards edged the Quakers in total shots 22-19, but doubled them up in corner kicks 6-3. Louisville Freshman Goalkeeper Amelia Henderhan finished with 9 saves for the game.

Lady Leopards 1st Road Tournament Win Since 2012

The win snaps the Lady Leopards three game losing streak in the postseason as they improve to 8-16 all-time in tournament play (all in Division I). This was Louisville’s first tournament victory since a 3-1 home sectional semifinal win over the Perry Panthers on October 17, 2016. 

The Lady Leopards had also dropped their last 5 road tournament games before upping their all-time mark to 4-13 on the road in the postseason with Monday’s result. Louisville’s last road tournament win came in a thrilling 2-1 double overtime victory at North Canton Hoover on October 18, 2012 when they captured their first ever Sectional Title.

Louisville Leopards Girls Soccer Overtime Games

The Lady Leopards have proven to be stellar when the game exits regulation. They are now 4-0 in overtime games all-time with 3 of those wins coming on the road. Louisville’s last overtime victory was a 1-0 shutout of the GlenOak Golden Eagles to earn their last Sectional Championship back on October 17, 2013.
