Lady Leopards Rally For Overtime Win at New Philadelphia – Girls Basketball

Lingenhoel Group - Arden and Lisa Lingenhoel - Cutler Real Estate AdThe Louisville Leopards Girls Varsity Basketball Team opened up the 2019-2020 campaign with a thrilling 59-55 overtime road victory over the host New Philadelphia Quakers Friday Night at New Philadelphia High School. 

Kayla Gibson scored 17 of her game-high 18 points in the second half and overtime to lead Louisville. She hit a pair of three-pointers during the Leopards second half rally and hit home 7 of her 8 free throw attempts in overtime. Paige Cole also scored 16 points and Sherilynn Mullett added 14 points to round out Louisville’s double digit scorers.

The Leopards trailed 27-15 at halftime, but dominated the third quarter 20-8 to erase the deficit and tie the game at 35-35 heading into the final period. Gibson and Mullett scored 7 points a piece in the third to spearhead the Louisville run.

Both teams tacked on 10 more points in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime at 45-45. Cole made a three-pointer for the Leopards only field goal in overtime. Louisville iced the game from the line making 11 of 12 free throws and shot 81% (22 of 27) from the charity stride for the game.

My Fit Life Personal Trainer AdThe Lady Quakers (0-1) were led by Josie Pry who also scored a game-high 18 points and hit 3 three-pointers. Two of her makes from beyond the arch came in overtime for New Philadelphia. Other top scorers for the Quakers included Paige Kaiser with 9 points, and both Julia Ress and Ajia Schreffler with 8 points each.

This is the Leopards first victory over the Quakers since a 40-26 win at New Philadelphia on February 1, 2016. Louisville still trails the all-time series 5-8, but now leads the series 4-3 when playing at NPHS. This is the first time the Lady Leopards have gone to overtime in an opener since a 59-57 overtime win at GlenOak on November 24, 2012.

UP NEXT: The Lady Leopards will next host the Tuslaw Mustangs on Tuesday, November 26. JV will begin at 6:00 PM and Varsity will follow around 7:30 PM.
