Louisville Leopards at New Philadelphia Quakers Girls Basketball Highlights 2016
Louisville 40, New Philadelphia 26
The Louisville Lady Leopards Girls Varsity Basketball team slugged out a 40-26 victory over the host New Philadelphia Quakers Monday Night at New Philadelphia High School. With the victory, Louisville improves to 18-1 on the season.
Alexa Oberster scored a team-high 11 points & pulled down 5 rebounds and Emily Hollifield finished with 7 points, a game-high 5 steals, and a block to lead the Leopards. Abby Beaver also tallied 5 points & recorded 3 assists for Louisville.
The Leopards defense stifled the Quakers offense all night long. New Philadelphia shot just 24% (7 of 29) from the floor and 14% (1 of 7) from three. At one point in the first half, Louisville shutout the Quakers over a span of 8:54. The bucket that ended the New Philadelphia drought was the only Quaker points in the entire second quarter.
The Leopards used the drought to go on a 12-0 run in taking a 17-6 advantage. They would never trail and remained in complete command throughout the rest of the contest.
Louisville scored 19 points off of 31 New Philadelphia turnovers. The Leopards finished with 19 steals on defense. In addition to Hollifield’s 5 thefts, Sabryna Benzel & Grace Jackson each recorded 4 steals and Sarah Lairson also had 3.
Louisville did not win the battle of the boards, but they did win in terms of second chance points 12-2. Jackson led the Leopards with a team-high 6 rebounds for the game.
The Quakers were led by Aaliyah Currence who finished with a double-double with a game-high 12 points, a game-high 10 rebounds, 3 steals, and a whopping game-high 6 blocks. She helped New Philadelphia finish with a 27-23 edge in total rebounds. Sarah Harr also scored 6 points and Lexee Miller added 5 for the Lady Quakers.
The win is Louisville’s first over New Philadelphia since a 40-36 road victory back on January 30, 1988. The Quakers had taken the previous 4 meetings within that 28 year span and still lead the all-time series 6-4. However, the Leopards hold a 3-2 mark in games played at New Philadelphia. Louisville is now 5-1 in non-conference play this season.
The Lady Leopards 18 game winning streak in a single season is now second only to the 1991-92 Louisville team which started their season with 24 straight victories. They are also just the 7th Leopards team to win 18 games in a regular season in their 41 year team history (1987-88, 1989-90, 1990-91, 1991-92, 2005-06, 2010-11)
UP NEXT: The Lady Leopards will next try to win the NBC Outright when they travel to Carrollton to take on the Warriors. JV will tip-off at 6:00 PM and Varsity will follow around 7:30 PM.
