Leopards Build 5-0 Advantage
Louisville appeared to be cruising to their fifth straight win in similar fashion to Tuesday’s 6-0 victory over Massillon. The Leopards led 5-0 midway through the third inning and held that same advantage through the middle of the fifth inning.
Louisville struck first in the opening frame. Junior designated hitter Karson Siegfried’s sacrifice fly to center field brought home junior center fielder Charlie Roberts from third to give LHS the 1-0 edge.
The Leopards extended their lead with four more runs in the top of the third inning. Senior shortstop JT Popick opened the inning with a double to right field and later scored on a passed ball. Sophomore first baseman Cole Miller drove home senior courtesy runner Connor Adelman and then Siegfried scored on an error during the same play to make it 4-0.
Two batters later, senior catcher Walker Kandel doubled on a line drive to right field to bring Miller to the plate to put Louisville ahead 5-0. Kandel would finish a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for the game as LHS pounded out 7 hits as a team.
Tigers Rally Back to Knot Game at 6-6
Leopard senior starting pitcher Connor Morley held the Tigers scoreless through the first four innings. Massillon finally broke through in the fifth following eleven straight innings of goose eggs from Louisville pitching. Junior first baseman Drew Stitt smacked a 2-run single to center field scoring junior courtesy runner Brayden Garofalo and sophomore left fielder Tyler Hackenbracht to cut the Tiger deficit to 5-2.
The Leopards got a run back in the top of the sixth via a sacrifice fly to right field by senior right fielder Zack Seaman. Courtesy runner Brandon Jackson came home on the play to put Louisville ahead 6-2.
Massillon answered with four runs in the bottom half of the sixth, all of which came with two outs. Hackenbracht hit a 2-run double to center scoring sophomore third baseman Sam Snodgrass and sophomore shortstop Gavin Marceric. Junior right fielder Xavier Hamid followed with a single to right that plated Hackenbracht. Then Stitt’s RBI single to left brought in the tying run in Hamid to knot the score at 6-6.
Massillon Walks Off in Seventh
Each team tallied six errors for the contest, but the mostly costly errors came by the Leopards in the bottom of the seventh. Junior center fielder Brennen Crowe got aboard via an error and advanced into scoring position at second base. Senior pitcher/third baseman Shane Rue followed with a bunt single and the Tigers had runners on the corners with no outs.
The Leopards intentionally walked junior second baseman Mathew McGeorge to load the bases and setup a force out at home plate. Snodgrass recorded Massillon’s first out of the inning on a fly ball that was caught by Roberts in center field. The runners stayed put and the game continued.
Marceric followed with a ground ball to the shortstop. The attempt to throw home for the force out was overthrown as Crowe slid in safely for the Tigers game winning run.
