The Louisville Leopards Varsity Baseball Team doubled up the host Marlington Dukes 4-2 Wednesday Evening at Marlington High School. The milestone victory was Louisville Head Coach Brian Warner’s 100th of his coaching career at LHS. The Leopards improved to 8-9 on the season with the win.
Leopards Claim Early 3-0 Lead
Louisville built a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and held it throughout. Senior first baseman Ryan Aljancic got the Leopards on the scoreboard first with a 2-out RBI double to center field that brought home sophomore pitcher Connor Morley for the first run of the contest. Senior catcher Kaedin Gotshall followed and reached on an infield error that allowed Aljancic to score from second to make it 2-0.
Senior designated hitter Tyler Jackson singled in the next at-bat to put runners on the corners. Then sophomore centerfielder Charlie Roberts singled home senior pinch-runner Evan Kroah to put the Leopards in front 3-0.
Morley Shuts Out Dukes in Final 6 Innings
Louisville would never surrender their advantage. Morley allowed 2 runs to the Dukes in his opening inning of work, but settled down to shutout Marlington the rest of the way. He retired the side in the second, fourth, and sixth innings and got out of jams in the first and third innings. Morley allowed 7 hits and struck out 1 in earning his team best 4th win of the year on the mound.
Louisville Out-Hits Marlington 10-7
The Leopards out-hit the Dukes 10-7 for the game. Aljancic, Morley, and Roberts all finished with two hits for Louisville.
The Leopards tacked on an insurance run in the top of the sixth to double their advantage at 4-2. Roberts cracked a 1-out single to center, stole second, and then advanced to third when junior third baseman Caleb Miller followed with a single to left field. Junior right fielder Zack Seaman drove in Roberts via a sacrifice fly two pitches later.
Grimes and Skelding Drive In Dukes Only Runs
First baseman Tommy Skelding and catcher Danny Grimes each finished with a pair of hits to lead Marlington. Skelding singled in left fielder Luke Tortola to get the Dukes on the board in the opening inning. Two batters later, Grimes singled in Skelding to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Shortstop Josh Dezenzo also smacked a 1-out double in the fifth inning for the Dukes only extra base-hit. However, he would be left stranded on second to end the frame.
Warner Secures Milestone Victory
Louisville Head Coach Brian Warner notched his 100th career coaching victory with the win. He now holds a 100-60 (.625) overall record as head coach of the Leopards since his tenure began in 2015.
