In game two, the Lady Leopards built a 2-0 lead before the Lady Streaks rallied to force extra innings. Louisville hung a 9-spot in the extra frame to take the game 11-2 forcing a doubleheader split with Lake.
Lady Leopards Take 2-0 Lead
The Lady Leopards got on the board first in the top of the fourth. Junior third baseman Kenzi Denzer was hit by a pitch and junior center fielder Brooke Haren followed with a double to advance Denzer to third. Two batters later, sophomore right fielder Chay Cline singled to center field to bring home Denzer for the first run of the contest.
Louisville manufactured another run in the sixth inning to double its advantage. Denzer was hit by a pitch again to get aboard. She then advanced to second on a passed ball and to third when Haren grounded out to third. Freshman second baseman Kaitlin Twinem followed with a sacrifice fly caught by shortstop Olivia Brown. Denzer was able to tag and speed home to make it 2-0 Lady Leopards.
Greathouse Hits Game-Tying Homer in 7th
Lake cut the Louisville lead in half just three pitches into the bottom of the sixth. Second baseman Brooklyn Ury singled on the first pitch of the inning. Center fielder Jocelyn Quior then hit a 1-0 pitch to center field for an RBI double to bring in Ury for the Blue Streaks first run on the contest.
Lake was down to its final out in the bottom of the seventh. Pitcher Gianna Greathouse wasted no time in hitting the first pitch thrown to her. She came through with a game-tying solo homer to center field that knotted the game at 2-2 and forced extra innings.
Louisville Erupts for 9 Runs in the 8th
The Lady Leopards got redemption in the top of the eighth when the erupted for 9 runs to take a commanding 11-2 lead. The 9 runs are the most extra inning runs scored by Louisville in any game in the history of the program. The Lady Leopards previously scored 5 runs in 3 extra innings of play against Lakota East in the 2019 State Championship game. This year’s team eclipsed that mark before Lake could record a single out in the inning.
Louisville batted through the entire lineup before an out was scored in building a 9-2 lead. Senior designated hitter Shelby Mayle and Denzer both singled to start the frame. Haren then reached on an error to load the bases. Twinem followed with a grounded to third, but the throw home was too late allowing freshman pinch runner Maggie Baker to score to put the Lady Leopards in front 3-2.
With the bases still loaded and no one out, Louisville cracked 4 straight RBI hits to put themselves in complete command. Cline hit a 2-run single to center scoring Denzer and Haren for her third RBI of the game. On the next pitch, junior first baseman Katie Heath ripped a 2-run double to left field that scored Twinem and Cline. Freshman pitcher Anna Sirohman then singled home Heath to make it 8-2. Junior shortstop Matti Benson followed with an RBI single to center scoring Sirohman to up the Leopard lead to 9-2.
The Blue Streaks retired the next two Louisville hitters, but the Leopards weren’t finished yet. Denzer doubled to left field scoring Benson to up the Louisville run total to double digits. Haren then followed with a single to center to score Denzer to put the Lady Leopards ahead 11-2. The run marked the fourth time that Denzer scored during the game.
Sirohman Earns the Win in the Circle
Sirohman pitched 8 innings, gave up 2 runs on 5 hits, issued 1 walk, and struck out 3 en rout to the victory in the circle for Louisville. She would retire the side in order in the 3rd, 5th, and 8th innings.
The Lady Leopards out-hit the Lady Streaks 11-5 in game two. Benson, Cline, Denzer, and Haren all recorded 2 hits each for Louisville.
