The Louisville Leopards Girls Varsity Basketball Team fell to the host Warren Howland Tigers Saturday at Howland High School. The loss snaps the Lady Leopards six game winning streak as they drop to 6-2 on the season.

Barwick and Haren Score Team High 18 Each

Lingenhoel Group - Arden and Lisa Lingenhoel - Cutler Real Estate AdSophomore guard Brooke Haren and freshman shooting guard Courtney Barwick both poured in a team high 18 points to lead the Leopards. Haren scored 10 points to lead Louisville in the first half. Barwick finished with 15 points in the fourth quarter and hit home 4 three-pointers during the game.

Four Lady Leopards finished in double figures. Senior forward Aubrey Thorne also made 4 three-pointers and finished with 14. Senior center/forward Kelsey Adelman added 10 points for LHS as well.

Tigers Use 19-0 Run to Overcome Early Deficit

Jenny Can Cleaning AdThorne hit a three-pointer on each of Louisville’s first two possessions as the Leopards jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead. Louisville remained in front by six points when Haren hit her third field goal of the period, via a jumper from the free throw line, to make it 14-8 with 2:19 to play in the first quarter.

Momentum shifted quickly after that as Howland scored the final six points of the opening quarter to knot the game at 14-all. Then the Tigers scored the first 13 points of the second quarter to pull ahead 27-14. Senior shooting guard Alyssa Pompelia led the Howland comeback scoring 12 of her 16 points in the second quarter alone.

Leopards Reseize Momentum & Lead

Senior guard Maddie Dyer ended Howland’s 19-0 scoring run with a three-pointer from the right wing midway through the second quarter. The three-point make snapped a 6:19 Leopard scoring drought and helped LHS reseize momentum with a 14-4 scoring run to close the first half. The Tigers still clung to a 31-28 lead at the break.

Louisville continued to chip away at the Howland lead as they two teams exchanged points to open the second half. Haren drove to the bucket to cut the lead to 37-36 and then Thorne hit home her third three-pointer of the night to put the Leopards back in front 39-37 with 2:55 to play in the third quarter.

Howland Answers Back to Build Largest Lead of the Game

My Fit Life Personal Trainer Side AdLouisville’s lone second half lead didn’t last long as the Tigers answered immediately on their ensuing possession. Sophomore Alyssa Massucci matched Thorne with her third three-pointer of the contest to kickstart an 11-0 Howland run. Massucci and senior shooting guard Taylor Lawrence combined for all 17 of the Tigers points in the third quarter as they took a 48-41 advantage into the final stanza.

A putback by Haren to open the fourth quarter got Louisville to within 48-43, but Howland answered with a 10-0 run to take their largest lead of the contest at 58-43.

Louisville Runs Out of Time

With the odds stacked against them, the Lady Leopards showed no interest in giving up. Barwick scored 10 consecutive Louisville points between a pair of buckets by Adelman as LHS shrunk the deficit to 64-57 with 1:47 to play.

Out of a timeout, the Leopards defense drew a charge on the other end to take possession back. Barwick dribbled hard to the hole and scored to get Louisville within 64-59 with 1:20 left in the game.

The Leopards were unable to get a shot off on their next offensive possession as the Tigers extended their advantage to 67-59 from the free throw line. Sophomore Jessie DeSalvo cashed in on a pair from the charity stride and Massucci split a pair to put Howland in front by a margin of 8.

The Tigers were an efficient 9 of 11 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and they needed to be because Louisville was red hot from long range to end the game. Thorne hit her fourth three-pointer of the game to cut the Howland advantage to 67-62 with 13.8 seconds remaining. DeSalvo converted a pair of free throws on the other end to continue to provide insurance points for HHS. Barwick hit a three at the buzzer for the Leopards to trim the final margin to just four points at 69-65.

Massucci Drops in Game High 22 to Lead Howland

The Lady Tigers (2-4) were led by Massucci who made 3 three-pointers and finished with a game high 22. Lawrence scored 17 of her 19 points in the second half and Pompelia scored 14 of her 16 points in the first half to round out Howland’s top scorers.

The Leopards have now dropped three straight meetings against the Tigers all in this calendar year. Louisville is now 1-4 against Howland all-time dating back to their first meeting in 2017, which includes an 0-3 mark when playing at HHS.
