Leopards Nip Bulldogs on the Road 5-4 – Baseball
Louisville 5, Green 4
The Louisville Leopards Varsity Baseball Team nipped the host Green Bulldogs 5-4 Monday Evening at Green High School. With the victory, Louisville improves to 4-1 on the season.
Pickens and Miller Drive in All Louisville Runs
Senior designated hitter Broc Pickens drove in three runs in three separate at-bats and junior third baseman Caleb Miller drove in the other two runs to account for the Leopards offense. Sophomore second baseman Connor Morley also led Louisville with 2 of the team’s 6 hits.
On the mound, senior starting pitcher Tyler Jackson pitched 5 innings, gave up 3 unearned runs on 3 hits, and struck out 5 to earn the victory. Senior Tony Brahler also gave up 1 run on 4 hits and struck out 1 in earning a two inning save.
Each Team Gets On the Board in the 1st Inning
The Leopards took the lead in the top of the first and never allowed the Bulldogs to go in front. Junior right fielder Zack Seaman led the game off with a single to right field, stole second, and advanced to third when a dropped third strike drew a throw to first. On the next pitch, Pickens grounded out to second base scoring Seaman from third to put Louisville on the board.
The Bulldogs matched the Leopards in the bottom of the first when shortstop JT Hubert scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Andrew Fearigo.
Leopards Score In Each of the First 4 Innings
Louisville added a run in each of the next two innings to pull ahead 3-1. In the second inning, Miller smashed a 2-out double to center field scoring junior shortstop JT Popick. In the third inning, Pickens grounded out to the pitcher scoring Seaman from third again. Seaman reached base on an error, advanced to second on a ground out, and stole third base before coming home via Pickens.
Green answered back again with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to knot the game at 3-3. Third baseman Jacob Rollyson hit a 2-out RBI triple scoring right fielder Trent Autz. Four pitches later, Rollyson scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
The Leopards reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth. Popick and Morley cracked back-to-back 1-out singles. Executing a double steal, the two runners advanced to second and third. Two pitches later, Miller grounded out to second base scoring Popick from third to put LHS in front 4-3.
Louisville Insurance Run Proves the Difference
Neither team scored again until Louisville added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. With 1 out, sophomore center fielder Charlie Roberts got aboard after getting hit by a pitch and then stole second base. Pickens followed with a single to center scoring Roberts from second to put the Leopards ahead 5-3.
Louisville’s seventh-inning insurance run would prove to be invaluable as Green inched closer in the last of the seventh. Fearigo hit a 2-out RBI double scoring centerfielder Luke Ickes from second base. Then Autz singled in the next at-bat to put Bulldogs on the corners. However, Brahler got Rollyson to ground into a fielder’s choice as Morley flipped to Popick to end the game.
