Popick Homers on First Pitch of Game
Senior shortstop JT Popick wasted no time in getting the Leopards the lead. On the first pitch of the game Popick hit a fly ball to left field that resulted in a solo home run to put Louisville up 1-0.
The homer is the second on the season for Louisville and the first since sophomore first baseman Cole Miller hit a three-run bomb in the Leopards opening day victory against West Ridge.
Teams Exchange Runs in the 4th and 5th
Louisville never surrendered their lead throughout even though each team exchanged runs in the fourth and fifth innings.Junior designated hitter Karson Siegfried led off the fourth inning with a double to center field. Two batters later, Miller singled to right field bringing Siegfried to the plate to expand the Leopards lead to 2-0.
The Twisters answered in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior pitcher Mason Stoldt singled home senior right fielder Ayden Hall on a line drive to left field to cut the Louisville lead in half at 2-1.
The Leopards got that run back in the next frame. Senior outfielders Connor Adelman and Zack Seaman each hit one-out singles on 0-1 pitch counts. Two batters later, junior second baseman Connor Morley singled to left field scoring Adelman from second base to give LHS a 3-1 advantage.
Dover again added a run in response in the bottom of the fifth inning. Center fielder Ethan Kellicker hit a two-out double to right field that scored courtesy runner James Leggett from first base to cut the Tornado deficit to 3-2.
Louisville Tacks on a Pair in the Sixth
Louisville broke the trend of four straight one-run frames with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning. Senior catcher Walker Kandel singled to begin the inning and was replaced by junior courtesy runner Kyle Vesely. An error by the Dover pitcher allowed Vesely to swipe second base and Miller’s ground out to first base allowed him to advance to third. On the next pitch, senior third baseman Caleb Miller singled to left field bringing home Vesely to make it 4-2 Leopards.
Two batters later, Adelman singled on a line drive to center field bringing home junior courtesy runner Brandon Jackson from third to make it 5-2. Adelman and Siegfried would each finish 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Leopards who out-hit the Tornadoes 10-3 for the game.
Warner Strikes Out Eight
Senior starting pitcher Anthony Warner pitched 5 1/3 innings, gave up two runs on two hits, and struck out eight to earn the victory on the mound for Louisville. Warner now leads the team in victories improving to 3-0 on the season.
Zach Root came on in relief in the sixth inning. He worked the final 1 2/3 innings scoreless allowing just one hit and striking out a batter. Root recorded his second save of the season after closing the game out.
